Hi Emma.
What happened to the dog to make him like he is now? Do you know if he was hurt by something or if this is a birth defect?
The thing with the eyes, I have a feeling what he has is keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or dry eye. Chihuahuas and other breeds with bulging eyes are more prone to it than some other breeds. In order to keep that under control, medicine has to be put in the dog's eyes twice a day for its entire life. If the medicine is stopped, the condition returns. The reason for this is that with dry eye, the dog's eyes stop producing their own tears, and the medicine has an ingredient in it called cyclosporine, which is an anti-rejection drug used in people who have had organ transplants. The way it works is that it tricks the body into thinking that it's normal so that it doesn't reject the new organ, and in the case of dry eye, it tricks the body into thinking that the tear ducts work again. Once you stop using it, the tear ducts stop working again and the dry eye returns.
As far as his legs go, I don't have any idea what that could be without knowing the dog's history. Chihuahuas are a VERY popular breed, and because of that, lots of people who have no business breeding dogs are breeding them just to sell to make money. They don't care if the dogs they are breeding to each other have genetic problems, or if the dogs are closely related, and so many times the puppies are born with problems, and skeletal deformities are one of them. His legs could even be like that because he didn't have proper nutrition while he was growing. So it's difficult to tell why they're like that without knowing what the dog has been through. If the dog was born that way, though, sometimes even though it looks to us like they are having an awful time of it, they do OK. Sometimes, though, they don't, and they are in pain. You need to have him checked by a vet to see what his or her opinion of the situation is. They will be able to help you there.
Hang in there with him if you can. You're doing a very good thing, and keep in mind that even if this doesn't turn out the way you might like it to, you STILL helped this dog by getting him out of that situation. God forbid, even if the vet suggests that he might be better off if you put him to sleep (and keep in mind, it will be your decision, you don't have to do it), you will still have saved him from living in pain for any longer than he had to. I commend you for helping this dog. I'm glad there are teens like you because you are the grownups of the future, and we need people who care about animals.
Ghilly
I was just wondering if he was an abused dog and you rescued him from that?? If so i am really glad........you sound very compassionate and caring for him.
What do you mean is he rescue dog?Like did I take him from the home he was currently in because the way he is?If so yes.
There will be someone else that will have some suggestions too. With the holidays it has been pretty quiet here. The vet may have some ideas too. Is he a rescue dog??
I will try calling and ask them about it.If that dosen't work...I'm not sure what else to do?...
Can you call the vet and tell him the situation?? Maybe they would look at him and you could work out a payment of some sort. He needs to be seen by the vet. Good luck and just know you are doing a good thing by taking care of him. Keep us posted........sara
