3 ops and stable

2 weeks ago our jack russell Molly was bitten badly - we took her to an emergency vets and they gave her an antibiotic and pain killer and said to return the next day. 4 am she was whipering wrapped in a dressing gown and we were warned that the pain killer would ware off. The operation was to stitcch her back up...2 holes so nothing wrong with that. Mid morning they said that they had performed the surgery but insited that she should have a full invasive operation to ensure none of her organs were damaged due to the fact she could have crush injuries. She got through 3.5 hours of operations and considered fine....Friday we were made to atek her home. Molly doesnt eat well she was very fit but when we had her spade it took weeks to get her back on track with feeding. We percivered with soup and porridge from a syringe and she did have some water but I wasnt happy Saturday and took her back.. a liitl warm they said gave her another injection of pain killer and antibiotics. Monday she wa sick and we took her back in..it looked like the stitches had opened where she had strained to go to the toilet...Wednesday they start consulting another vet referal would cost 8K we advise that Molly has not eatern for 11 days and I wrote to the practice manager. She was weak but from what I could gather there was a small window otherwise the jaunace she now had and probably perintinitus would kill her. 4 hours, flush her system out with saline...re-sew her wounds top to bottom of the poor pup and a feeding tube fitted. We vist everyday her weight dropped from Saturday 5.4kg to 4.4kg by Tuesday and they increased her feeding regime. She became cold and went into an incubator - her jaundace is gone and her temp is normal, her food has increased - she did have one bout of sickness Sunday but since has been fine and they took her out in the sun. Swabs back from first op suggest e-coli and with antibiotics and all she has gone through no wonder she doesnt look bright - the other vet consulted said she would look quite bad. She is skeletol but is doing all she is being asked....the vet is not impressed that in 4 days this is slow and says we may have to make a decision soon. She isnt on pain killer as she isnt in pain she does need a lot of nursing and it seems to have worn the staff out at the surgery. If she keeps her increased food down and picks up in the next 24 hours I think thats fair as we have exhausted every avenue. I suggested they should warm the food a little as tube feeding suggests but this fell on deaf ears with the vet ...along with trying a topical spray which combats e-coli and msra and is safe..unless they can say hand on heart this bacteria is from the bowel which was deemed to be intact from the or returning perintinitus again which Molly would not recover from another operation as she is too weak I think she deserves 24-48 hours to see if she starts to show improvement. Is there anything we can ask or try at this late stage?

Dear Ginger...

her most recent swabs came back Thursday which cultered showed only 1 antibiotic would work...Molly always not a good eater when down..and these only make you more depressed. The vet was insistant that everything should go down her feeding tube and she couldnt tollerate the increased amounts with anti sickness drugs and antibiotics to boost ans she vomited and the vet just gave in.She lost so much weight under thier care and it was exhausting from them..but thats what the emergency service is for. He viens were shot as so many catherters over 3 weeks and we couldnt bear any more....she died in my husbands arms at the surgery in the garden ...it was sunny and the birds were singing..she loved the garden. She died 3.30pm Friday and the vets bill landed on the doorstep 10.30 am Saturday even though it is being dealtwith direct by our insurers. We wiat to collect mutly bears ashes ...the pain just wont subside, she was always there for us when we were ill, depressed she had a special gift..and we feel we let her down! It was our 2nd wedding aniversary yesterday and we just sat in silence with our other mutly, couldnt eat...couldnt rest...couldnt stop crying! Luckily she was in no pain just wasting away and no hope of ITC it isnt something vets deal with long term care of sick animals ...they like to fix em and get em out of the surgery...Molly needed more..she deserved it but didnt get it. Thank you for your comment x

I think she deserves more time too. She has been through hell and high water here. I have no idea how she could have contracted the e-coli infection, but it is a nasty bug. All you can hope for is that she will buck up more on her antibiotic treatment. Of course they do sometimes have side effects, and nausea and loss of appetite can happen.
If she doesn't appear to be in pain, but is simply weak and going slowly, then I think she needs more time here.
I hope she makes a good recovery. I do wish you and her well. Please let us know, if you can, how things progress.
