I am so very sorry about the passing of your little dog. It is always hard to take, but especially when it has come as such a shock. It may have been a heart attack or stroke, yes, or it could have been a hidden spleen tumour which suddenly ruptured.
There is NOTHING you probably could have done to stop this. So please don't blame yourself. Sudden death does sometimes happen, and like Margot said, you can't know the cause of death unless a necropsy (autopsy) is done. That will only give you some closure about the cause, but you may not wish to do that for many reasons.
The only consolation is your little girl did not seem to suffer very much at all at the end, and probably passed in her sleep.
Blessings to her Soul.
MY HEART HURTS FOR YOU I am so very sorry this has
happened!
I have talked about this before, sometimes a dog can act
normal for years, without warning they may have a massive
heart attack that can come out of nowhere and your baby
is gone without any advance symptoms.
I CAN NOT tell you this was what happened,as Margot said
you need a neucropsy(autopsy on a dog) for any insight into
the actual cause and to get an answer to be sure.
I know how this hurts and understand your loss at such a
sudden,horrible loss...HUGS

I am so sorry to read this. Such a shock and heartbreaking when this happens. Could have been heart, stroke, etc. Unfortunately, unless you get a necropsy done, you will probably not know the cause.
Hugs.
