Broken Nail

My dog broke the top-tip portion of one of his nails.  The nail has fallen off and the quick remains, half way severed. I've read that the quick will eventually harden up and fall off, is this true? It is causing him pain and it does bleed when he has hit it against something.  Should I cut it off my self?  There is a very substantial portion intact, however it seems it that it may eventually heal incorrectly (possible???) or fall off on its own over a very long period of time. The toe on which the broken nail is affiliated is red and irritated.  Is this a sign of infection?

Wow, you got a great clear shot of that!  Good work!  :D

I would just leave it and let it heal on its own.  I will eventually get back to normal.  The quick will recede and the nail will grow out normally, and then you can trim the nail so that it's even.  If you cut it now you're going to injure the quick and make it bleed again, and you don't want to do that.  If it were me, I would just leave it and let it grow out and all will be well.
