9 year old grehound, S7-L1 slipped disc

my dog had a dorsal laminectomy 6 weeks ago. she did very well for the first two weeks, her rear limp was gone but now it is back.  the leg is a funny shape, a bit bowed.  she can walk and does not appear to be in pain but i am now confining her to a small room with no exercise. and she is on metacam and muscle relaxants.  I hope it will improve?

Hi Rosie...I remember the disappointment!  One of mine has had this surgery...We had a set back at 6wks. also...I remember crying, as I knew I had followed instructions to a tee....Our 8wk. followup said his back was perfect, although I felt he was still in pain....

The limp? Was it originally blamed on his disc problem? Was his leg examined also?

My dog was paralyzed when he went into surgery...He still has a profound limp that is worse on some days than others.... However, he can do everything he use to, so I'm grateful!

I will say that it took him a year to get this far, so I don't want you to be so disappointed.......Joint supplements have helped alot & he will take them from now on....He's 8 and his surgery was over 2 years ago.

I have also added a "Certified" Canine Acupuncturist to the mix & my Oliver has been able to stay free of pain with Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs. Therefore, he does not need to take Prescription Pain Meds.

Anyway, hang in there......I found that my Oli's leg muscles were beginning to atrophy because I made him rest too much...We then had to start exercising to build his leg & Back muscles back up....

Just some ideas that I wanted to send your way....Let me know how it's going.....Karla

Chloe has been the perfect patient and just laid down watching everyone come and go.  The only time she moved was when I took her to the vet to have her staples out, 12 days post surgery and a one minute walk at 5 weeks post surgery which I stopped as she started limping.  On her discharge note it said to give two 5 minute walks a day at 5 weeks.  So now I have stopped all exercise and will do so until her appointment mid
February with the surgeon.  It is such a huge dissapointment.

Now she is happy in herself.  She busies herself chewing a bone and licking the cats.  She is eating well, chicken and rice and there is no constipation at all.  She does not go outside to go to the toilet as I have put nappy pads down in the kitchen and she walks about 4 steps to use them.  The limp is worse than before the op though and I cannot see any signs of pain.  Thanks for your responses.

I'm confused.....The 1st stage of recovery from this kind of surgery is 4-6wks. Confinement to a crate or very small area is a must. Only leash walks for potty breaks....This is common practice.

Did your surgeon not recommend this? She should have never been allowed loose in the beginning...(If she were).

If she has been confined and has started limping, I would go with loss of muscle in her legs from not being able to use them....The trick here is to start short leash walks to build her muscles (In legs & back), back up.

Because of no exercise, she could also be constipated....Has she been pooping regularly? Also possible is that her anal glands are full.

This is a major surgery and the healing process is continued for 1 year!

She's not in pain because the Metacam is taking care of that....You might consider having her re-evaluted by her surgeon....She should have a follow up a few weeks after surgery....Please come back and let us know what you find out......Karla

I don't know anything about this surgery, and the after-care necessary, and what to expect in the way of recovery time. I advise you to call either your own vet, or the specialist who did her surgery for some advice from them.
Did the vet give any idea  how long she would have to rest? What to expect, and what regime to follow? And what signs to look out for which may mean they need to take another look at her? Have there been any follow-up appointments for them to examine her? There should be, after any surgery especially major surgery.
