Possible cold?

I have never had a dog before.  I just adopted a 1 year Chihuahua mix (looks like a jack russell as well) on 01/21/2013.  She is great etc.  Recently she has had this nasty productive cough and green mucus from her nose.  She has a check up tomorrow ( the shelter gave me a voucher for a free exam, no tsure what that all entales).  My questions are:  are dogs similar to humans?  can they get colds? how long should a cold last? what can i do for her? what other questions should i bring up to the vet?
thank you in advance

Aww thanks for adopting her! I'm not surprised she's got an infection, coming from a shelter situation. I'm sure your vet will fix her right up :)

No, dogs cannot catch a cold. But the green colour of the mucus means that there is an infection, probably bacterial, in the upper respiratory tract. The best thing you can do is make sure she sees a vet as soon as possible. She will likely need antibiotic treatment. I hope she will recover very soon.
