Help I don't know how I should take care of my 17 year old pug

After a good 17 years as my best friend, my pug now has weakened back legs.  He wobbles when he walks and if he sits down, he can't get up.

I have already taken him to the vet and they recommended many blood tests, x rays etc just to rule the possibility for surgery or end of life.

I did not want to put my pal down as he still eats well, drinks, and smiles at me but sleeps most of the day when I'm at work.

I know he is old, I am now considering the following plan for his last days.  Please comment if I am making the right assessments.

1)  D/C Nsaid (rimadyl) - all it did was cause him diarrhea
2)  Try compounded tramadol - can help him sleep in the day and take away pain?
3)  use diapers on him for his incontenence
4)  Get a walking wheels so he can move when I am home
5)  Get a glucosamine vitamin to help with joints
6)  Get a probiotic to balance his GI
7)  Get a draining bed just in case his diaper fails
8)  Confine him to limited space when I am gone at work

Please comment on my plan of action and let me know if my line of thinking is incorrect

I really appreciate any suggestions.

thanks

Totoro

My dog takes Deramaxx (anti-inflammatory) and Chondroflex (joint supplement) for his arthritis. I would recommend ordering them online - much cheaper.

I would also recommend belly bands. They are diaper wraps for male dogs and they work wonders. They seriously saved my sanity after my boston terrier became incontinent.

I think your dog is lucky to have such a loving friend in you :)

Have you tried another med besides Rimadyl?  Also, if you want to help him walk, especially outside, take a cloth grocery bag and cut down the sides till you get to the bottom.  Slip this under him and use the handles so you can help take some of the weight off his legs when he walks. You might have to look for a really small bag cause he's small.  I'm sure you'll get some really good advice from others that read your post, but I think you have a good plan to help your friend enjoy the rest of his time, and I think he is a very lucky dog to have someone take such good care of him.
