Spencer...I'm surprised that xrays weren't taken before they even considered sending you to a specialist!
If nothing else, an xray would have ruled out a tumor on the spine (Getting more common), then they could have proceeded to the spinal injury...

Because it happened a year ago also, then a tumor is unlikely....The usually grow fast and the paralysis gets worse daily...

I'd have to say that this is a herniated disk in the neck....It's called IVDD (Intervertebral Disk/Disc Disease).....You can google it and read all the info you want.....ALWAYS, strict cage rest for 4-6 weeks is mandatory plus pain medication and Steroids....Your Muscle relaxers usually are not affective unless they are used with the steroids.....

There is a surgery to correct this or you can continue to treat with each flair up......The good news is if the herniation is in the neck, total paralysis is rare.....If the herniation in further down the spine (Lumbar area) , then a rupture is likely & causes total paralysis....If this occurs, the first 36 hrs. are the most important for surgery to be successful.....

Anyway, look around and see if you don't agree that your guy has a herniated Disk in the cervical area (Neck)......Let me know what you think....Karla

Karla! Thank you! This is my first online forum.  Spencer is 6, and had similar issues last November.  Spencer has only cried twice EVER...once last November and again with this issue. He's the toughest dog I know. Last year he recovered with medicine...this time we don't think it's going to progress like that.

No x-rays have been done.  We met with our vet and an orthopedic, and they both think it's neurological, and not orthopedic.  I strayed from my vets referral sources, because I was unhappy with the lack of answers I was receiving.

He's meeting with a neurologist Momday...I'm fearful of what the outcome may be...
