Proin and CHF

Hi,

My dog, Myst, is an 11 yo female GSD.  She has been taking Proin (75mg twice a day) for urinary incontinence, which kept the problem under control.  She was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure yesterday.  I was so upset that I forgot to ask my vet, and now he is not available until Tue.:  I read that Proin may be bad for dogs with heart issues.  During the exam, the vet said that Myst's blood pressure was "all over the place".  Should I stop giving her Proin right now?

Thank you,
Tanya.

I did some more research, and there is no doubt in my mind that Proin increases blood pressure and heart rate in significant percentage of dogs.  So I took Myst off it that same day.  When I talked to her vet, he concurred.

Proin may be fine for healthy dogs, but not for ones with a heart condition, clearly.  Thank you for your response.  :)  Cheers.

Have you heard anymore on this? I have read alot of not so good things about Proin. Check it out. I threw my dogs Proin away and will be trying a natural supplement. My vet did mention something to me about they would have to monitor her kidneys and that. It can have bad effects

I really am unsure as I have no experience with Proin. But if you are in any doubt, and cannot receive advice from any vet on the telephone until Tuesday, then the best thing might be to stop giving it to her. Until you know for sure whether it is OK or not.

Also -is she being prescribed any medication for her CHF? ACE inhibitors usually help with this, and especially if the blood pressure is elevated.
Anyway, you will be able to discuss this with your vet on Tuesday.
