Hi margot49. Thanks so much! I ended up giving him a bath In suave shampoo he got better right away I also had doused his lower back in apple cider viniger the night before in desperation I figured it should be washed off it was diluted pretty well I guess he had alot of dirt he roles around in it alot this itch problem comes and goes but it seemeed worse. He's fine now. Anyways I just wanted to point out that if you give your dog garlic only use 1/2-1 clove it can be toxic and chop it up into little pieces minced and put in food I gave it to him whole in bread and he swallowed it whole he could've choked but didn't garlic is good for dogs in small amounts I will be giving it to all my dogs this was the first time I gave him garlic I've heard of its benefits before. Check out this website it tells about garlic for dogs and cats http://www.petremedycharts.com/Learning%20Center/Introduction%20to%20Herbs/LH%20Garlic/Garlic_for_pets.html
Have you checked him for fleas? With a heavy coat like that, if you don't have a flea comb, use a small tooth comb and line comb him against the lay of the coat. Look for fleas and any flea dirt, esp near the base of the tail. Good place to start just in case it is that. Have a dog here that was doing the same. I found one fkea on him but I thdn picked up topical Advantage.
