Punchy is a two year old puppy

Hi there,

I am seeking questions on renal faliure.  My moms puppy is a two year old shi-tzu.  He was diagnose with renal faliure.  His levels (BUN) are way over 100.  My mom did not know what was wrong with him and took him to a vet in Palmdale or Lancaster, don't know exactly where, and they never told her what was wrong with Punchie.  Finally after seven months I told her I would take him to a vet out her Monteray Park, California.  Well to my saddness, Punchy is a critical stage of renal faliure.  I am very sad, I don't know what to tell my mom.  He is my mom's life.  Over all, I am praying that Punchy beats the odds and makes some kind of recovery. He is so young, I don't know what to expect.

Please if any one has experience any thing like this with their puppy, please give me hope.  The vet is great but I just would want someone to share their story with me and let me know if their puppy is okay now.

I know God is so great and will help punchy.  Please let me know what you have experience.

Thank you,
Dalila

Hi ginger899,

Thank you so much for your help.  I really appreciate it!!! I feel lately like it's been like roller coaster with Punchie.  He seems good, but when we do the blood for his BUN, they are off the chart.  He had a blood transfusion on Sat and seems more alert and orient.  That gives me hope.  I know the blood transfusion caused his BUN to go over 140.  The machine could not even register his levels.  His vet is great and has given me great support.  I took him this morning and they gave me more things to help him increase his fluid intake.  I guess he is not drinking enough H2O.  He is on antibiotics, Hi-Vite drops, Epogen injections, k/d food and fluid IV. I pray to God that it helps him and he gets better.

I am sorry, I guess I don't have anyone to share this with so I just keep going and going.  Thank you for listening.  Sometimes that is the best help anyone could give ; )

I will look into  "Ask a Veterinarian" questions to see if they have any more suggestions in helping Punchie.

Thank you for your help.  I guess he is so young and full of life that it saddens me to see him like this.

I'm sorry because I don't know very much about renal failure and how to handle it. I have learned, mostly from this community, that it is a disease that can be managed, with medication and diet, but not cured.
I know that there are other people here who have some experience of this and may be able to help you.
Also I remember there are quite a few threads dealing with this condition. If you go through to 'archives' here, and put 'renal failure' into the search box, that might be helpful.
You could also post on the "Ask a Vet" expert forum.

(There used to be a link through to the Ask a Vet forum on this page...I have just tried to find it, and it's gone. I will find out how to get through, and post back, let you know)
