Puppy won't eat or drink anything at all... been to the vet.

We adopted a puppy from the local animal shelter a week ago. She is about 12 weeks old. They had her spayed anyway..even we thought it was to early. She acted like a normal puppy for the first couple of days but then she stopped eating, was vomiting, had diarreah and lost weight very fast. She was also very depressed and lethargic. We took her to the vet and they diagnosed her with kennel cough and giardia. We gave her the medicine and tried giving her some pedialite because she still wouldn't eat. We took her back to the vet the next day because she was so dehydrated and skinny. they had her on an iv for four and a half days. she didn't eat the whole time but improved. the dr. told us to take her home and try to get her to eat because she wasn't vomiting anymore. she was normal for a couple of hours but then she went back to being lethargic ( but not as bad) and still won't eat ANYTHING. I'm afraid there is something that the vet didn't find but we don't have the money to take her back.she wont live if she doesn't eat. Any ideas are a tremendous help.

Yes that's true. Antibiotics like metronidazole can cause nausea. And your pup is so young, and most likely sensitive to all those  medications.

You could get a syringe (without needle) from a pharmacy, and make a liquidized broth with baby food (without salt or onion powder!) and warm-ish water. Then feed it to your puppy by inserting the syringe at the corner of her mouth at the back, and giving a little at a time. I would try this every 2 hours. It's a kind of force-feeding I know, but may help her regain a little strength which she needs right now.

Hi,
Im not a vet but i have experienced kennel cough well not me my dog had it twice from pets i have brought home from the shelter, when he had it the vet told me he would feel as though he had the flu and it took ages for him to get better and also with ref to the guardia they treat that with metronidazole antibiotic and i have been on that loads of times before and it makes you feel very sickly so im thinking if your puppy has kennel cough and guardia and is on metronidazole she is going to feel really terrible also i had to feed my dog with a spoon as he could hardly stand up and the only thing he would eat was sweet things like readybrek or porridge with warm water and a bit of sugar and i used a syringe to get him to take water also she needs to be kept really dry and warm,
I hope this helps x
