Trembling

Last week I got a 2 yr old Maltese from the dogs home.  She seems happy and content here, but I have noticed that she trembles a lot for no apparent reason.  Is this normal or is something wrong?

thankyou so much for your feedback, it was very helpful.  the vet had checked her out pretty thoroughly at the dogs home, so I think the trembling is more a behavioural thing.  She is doing it less the last day or two.  I suspect she is a little bored.  I walk her for about 1/2 hour every day but she doesn't seem to be able to entertain herself, even with toys and food and I can't play with her all day!  She is licking the floor a lot too, which I think is also boredom.  I might have to try a few different toys.  I guess it is quite an adjustment for her.  I just didn't want to ignore the trembling if it was something I could change!
Thanks again!

I remember when we adopted my 2 yr dachshund, when she came home she couldn't stop trembling when she was around us. I asked to the HUmane Society ladies and they told me that it's most likely normal for a dog to not feel comfortable in a new environment and around new people. They just need to adjust and it takes a little time.  In fact she stopped trambling like a week later or so.
If  your pet keeps trembling, like JayBay said, take it to the vet and have it checked!
Good luck and let us know

Can you be more specific on "a lot"?  Does the trembling seem to be in reaction to anything like a noise or visitors or other dogs?  How long does it last and how many times in one day?

It's either a behavior issue or a physical issue, so your best bet would be to have your vet examine your dog first.  Go ahead and either confirm or rule out a physical condition.  If nothing is physically wrong, then you can start looking at behavioral issues.  On the behavior side of things, some dogs get the shakes when they're frustrated.  Usually the frustration stems from not having enough exercise that challenges them both physically and mentally.

Small dogs in particular have these  needs neglected because people tend to treat them more like human babies instead of the canines and athletes they were meant to be.  This crazy fad for carrying dogs in an oversized purse can really ruin a dog.  It has four legs for a reason and needs to use them to stay healthy.  OOPS!  Sorry I went off on a tangent there.  It's way past my night-night time!  :-)
