collie was given ivomec

I took my 2 year old collie to the vet on wednesday for a hot spot that was getting infected and the vet put him on antibiotic, and gave me ivomec to treat him for possible scabies. I gave him this medicine when I returned home not knowing the risks of this medication in collies. At 5:00 he was acting very drunk, I took him back to the vet and they gave him charcoal and put him on IV fluids. She told me to take him home and watch for seizures and if he seizures for more than 3 minutes call her in route back to the vet. He began having seizures every 5 to 10 minutes, could not walk and his breathing was very labored but fast. We ended up taking him to the emergency room that night where he stayed so they could give him the anti-seizure medication. I picked him up in the morning and took him back to the vet where he stayed all-dat to be monitored. We did this until this thursday. He is now home with me, I took his cath out on saturday because he was getting so active. He is still sleeping a lot, but eating good and still very weak/unsteady. I am worried that he is not going to be the same dog he once was. I see steady improvement everyday, but he still cannot stand for more than a few minutes at a time. I message his legs so that he does not loose too much muscle mass. Will my dog return back to the way he was before? I am so heart broken over this, Max is the best dog I have ever had and the vet keeps telling me it will take time. The vet that did this feels so bad and has paid for all of his emergency care, and I am thankful for that. Are there any lasting effects from this drug? I have never seen anything like this in my life I thought my dog was going to die in front of me. Please give me some words of encouragement...

your veterinarians should NEVER have given Ivermectin to a Collie. This is mal-practice!  everyone knows that.  Sight hounds are completely intolerant to Ivermectin.  Can be fatal. Was a clear mistake on vets part that is why he is paying for the ER care.

I hope she gets over this soon and then you need to move on to another vet!!!!!

Check out GardenWeb and click on pets.  You can find your way to the forum on "Ivomec dosage for dogs... yet again" and get a ton of info.  Or you can just google "ivermectin wormer for dogs" and look for the GardenWeb link.  Collies and some other herding breeds can't have ivermectin or "Ivomec" at least in normal dosage or maybe not at all but there are a ton of posts just on this one subject.  I hope you see this and check it out.  will you go to my profile or whatever and let me know if you got this?  Good luck
