just a little FYI-pet collars/locators

so yesterday i HAD to go buy doggie treats....stretch was driving me nuts b/c he didnt have any for a couple days, and he'd follow me to the kitchen everytime i opened the pantry or fridge....

so anyways, i had to go to petco, and hit the 'doggie bar'.....when i walked in they had their little table with clearance and mgr's specials, and i saw this pet ID collar....we had wanted to get him chipped, but it's not in our budget right now....but there it was! a collar with a usb flash, for $11, normally $44.....and we love it! it stores vet and contact info, personality and favorite foods/snacks, shot records, etc....as well as pictures.....and the cool thing(1 i was hesitant about), it has a password protector, so if someone does find him, they can't just edit the info...the PW makes the info "read only material"......of course, that doesnt mean that someone couldnt just throw it away, but heck if they have a chip, who's to say they have to take him to a vet or shelter?

but i just thought i'd share that, for people who'd like a chip and can't afford it, or don't like the idea of the chip in general....

also, it's a 9.99/yr fee, that allows his info to be stored on the site's database, where if the usb is gone or unreadable, a vet or anyone can get onto the site, type in the serial number located on the collar, and get his info, and he can be home again!!!

lol jaybay.....

well we wanted him chipped, but with a new baby on the way, $50 is half a carseat cost lol.....but i had this UGLY UGLY UGLY dog out in kentucky, and he was chipped, and we paid for the service, and he was still jacked.....so to me, i figured, well, if no one's going to turn him in, i'm just as good spending 11 than i am spending 50.....man, to this day, i wonder why they jacked the UGLY mutt breed thingy, rather than our full-blooded chi.....also, i figure, if he got lost, at least with the USB chip, someone wouldn't have to take him to a shelter or kennel or vet, because the info is viewable by anyone, where as the chip is only good with a vet who can scan the chip(or so i've been told).....

doc holliday----haha, i love that name! i actually like "Doc" from Tombstone too lol....val kilmer was quite sexy in that movie, of course till he contracted his "disease" lol.....

Our vet's charge for microchipping is under $50.  IF I remember correctly, it depends on what brand of chip you get as to the charge for maintaining the information on the company's database.  Our Dal came to us from a rescue organization, and they have all their dogs chipped. Good thing too, because Doc Holliday is a champeen collar-escapee.  He's much better now that we've worked with him for a few months, but if he gets into one of his "Doc's Not Home" moods, he's gone.  I don't think a greyhound could catch him when he decides to floor it.  LOL!

Both of our dogs have chips in them. The breeder had them microchipped, so I didn't even have to do anything. I believe it was about $30 each, so if you pay a $10 fee per year, it breaks even in 3 years.

If someone wants to keep your dog, I think it'll be really hard to get them back. But if they're found by a good Samaritan, both solution would work.

It's like insurance. I pay for it, but I hope to never have to use it.
