seizures

I read the article "Read this before you post"...but I HAVE  had my dog to the vet for his seizures...He is a 6 year old blue chihuahua, named Little Boy Blue :).  He had his first seizure about 4? years ago, had his next one maybe a year later ( not as severe)  and the blood work came back showing only an elevation in his liver levels. (they said only). I was told it could be hypoglycemia, and to keep an eye on his gum color-poor guy, every time they looked pale he got either honey or cornsyrup!  He had one in the last year, injured his back about 3 months ago ( we didn't know how, until I saw the seizure he had yesterday, and I'm thinking one of those grand mal could have done that!)  , and when I took him to two different vets, and asked about the seizure too, they said there could be a lot of different reasons.  They did bloodwork, and nothing showed up.  I am aware of the liver shunt possibility, but most of the reasons that he could be having these- well, they said they should have shown up before now! His applehead is perfect, not large enough or overexaggerated to be hydracephalus (sp?)...on and on it goes.  They have told me that seizures are not life threatening...but, he has had two grand mal in two days....he is fine a little while after them, after the drunken walking and slobbering end, and I still give him corn syrup as soon as I can, too- they said it couldn't hurt, and the seizures end pretty soon after.  Almost immediately yesterday.  Last night and today he is is normal self.  I know that this almost resembles babbling- it is just that I have been over and over this so many times! I have researched all I can find- I'm just not sure what to do!!

My pom is 14.5 years and very healthy. I just recently had his teeth cleaned and shots. 6 days after he had a small seizure and 9 days later another one. I am thinking either being put to sleep or the shots.

We had a poodle we adopted from the shelter, may have also had some cocker spaniel in her, and she had epilepsy.  She was having seizures about once a month, perhaps.  Our vet prescribed Phenobarbitol, after which she only got one seizure per year, approximately, so the medicine controlled it.

In my opinion, irregardless of what is causing your dog's seizures, SOMEthing should be given to your dog to prevent these things, and this is because despite what your vets say, seizures can cause some level of brain damage.  But keep in mind, too, various seizure medications have a few side effects, one of which is liver damage, and in fact, our poodle eventually died of liver failure, but she had been on the medicine a long time and was pretty old when she passed.

Hello & welcome...I don't consider this babbling at all!  Sounds to me like your a responsible pet owner and we need more like you..... The cause of most seizures are never found and are just treated. I personally would be playing detective and trying to figure it out....You have a clue here and that's where I'd start:

Elevated Liver Enzymes  (Do you know what the level was?) is a sign of too many toxins in the system.....Are the toxins causing the seizures? Who knows, but I'd be looking for anything toxic going into his system & eliminating it for his all around health....

Most would think about poisons, but I'm talking about normal things that maybe wouldn't effect another dog, but seem to be hard on your little Chi....

I have a friend that Chi was having seizures.....After careful evaluation (By the owner) it was discovered to be the Heartworm medication he was on....
Once it was changed to a different type, the seizures subsided & have never returned...This is what I mean about different toxins....

Here are some things to think about:
Flea & tick products can cause seizures.....Which do you use?
Any medication can elevate Liver Enzymes....Is he on any?
Chemicals in drinking water (Tap) are dangerous....Is your city water treated w/chemicals?
Low quality Petfood is obnoxiously full of chemicals, dyes, preservatives, unknown ingredients, etc. Are you feeding him a grocery store or discount center brand? If you are, you need to stop!

Think about this: Has it happened around the same time he gets his vaccines? You need to rule that out!

Start here and see if you can make a connection with anything...Come back and let me know what you think......Karla
