steroid dosage for dog

My dog is 118 pounds and has a skin condition that causes him to break out and have open wounds and now has caused lymph node swelling in groin and back leg.  My vet has put him on prednisone 100 mg twice daily for 5 days and then 100mg daily and tapering down from there.  This seems like a really high dosage and I'm concerned about giving such a high dose.  He is already weakened from the illness and don't want to make him worse.  He has had multiple tests and a biopsy and they still don't know what the cause is.  thanks for your help.

The dose sounds high to me also. My dog sligtly smaller than yours was put on pred. for a chronic condition. We were told to give him 40mg once a day. I am weigh a lilttle more than your dog I don't know how much diffrence there is between a person and a dog but I had to take 50mg once a day.

Sound unusually HIGH to me, too. My niece's Great Dane (110lbs.) took the pred. for inflammation and her dose was 50mg. 2@day. My Bichon has taken it for a skin disorder and the most she was given was 5mg. 2@day. There was a discussion about this a couple of weeks ago. Let me see if I can find the thread and I'll direct you to it before you decide....Be back...Karla
