Benadryl is safe for dogs. For Golden Retrievers I know it is. My vet advised 5 benadryl at a time along with an aspirin. My Golden Trooper who is now sadly passed over encountered quite a few allergens in his 14 years! He was a highly bred dog and they do tend to have more allergies than most. Not a good thing. The benadryl/aspirin became a standard treatment around here. And it did clear him up quickly. As for dosage, it depends on the weight of the dog. Only your vet can tell you for sure. So DO NOT do this without consulting your vet.
All the time you've put into giving the dog benedryl and watching him and posting on this forum, you could have been to the vets by now. GO!
Jess,
It sounds like your dog found a bee's nest or perhaps some toxic ant's nest. I don't know if benadryl is safe for dogs or not. I will suggest you try the EyeOn Equine Care wraps that produce far infrared rays that are known to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. They do have a pet care section.
This might be too late...I hope not...If I were you...I would take your dog to the vet. I had a similar situation with my Jack Russell. She is almost blind in one eye. She was outside...we lived in the country...and she got struck in the eye by a venomous snake...it was a scratch on the cornea that was not noticeable to me...but she had this drooping skin under her chin that went all the way to the ground...it was the most hideous thing I had ever seen...never seen anything like that before. Anyway, I rushed her to the vet and she was treated...the skin went back to normal...but now she has a cloudy spot in that eye. You just never know and when something comes up like that...especially if you live in the country...it is best to get them to a vet.
Originally, it was not in this forum; it was in the ENT forum and the post was switched to the proper forum.
Hi..I feel that the input that u got from Ginger is very good. Like she said, contact your vet if you need to. Good luck & stay calm.
This forum is for Pets, NOT humans....it always was & always will be.
Somehow you have it confused.
You ARE actually on the dogs community. That's ok but if you posted on the "Ask A Vet" Expert forum you might get some help from a vet there. I'm sorry I didn't see your post before, have only just come online. Of course by now, hours later I don't know if whatever I say will be any help to you.
I don't know exactly where you live, but could this be spider or snake bite do you think? If you see a double puncture-mark anywhere on his skin, then you can say it's probably a snake. Most snake bites cause local swelling and some pain, even if it's a bite by a non-venomous snake.
If it is around your dog's muzzle it sounds to me like he has put his nose in something that bit him back. Either down a hole, or got bitten or stung while sniffing or snapping at some critter. It sounds more like a sting because you can see no wound or blood. But look carefully.
If it's a bee sting, that can be quite painful, but not necessarily too dangerous so long as he wasn't stung inside his throat. The swelling will go down if it was a bee sting, but might take some time as the sting itself continues to pump venom even when no longer attached to the bee. And he will feel rough. Benadryl would help this. Crushed-ice packs or cold compresses will help the swelling too.
Does he have any other symptoms? (If his face is painful he may well not feel like eating) -but I mean any other symptoms apart from that.
I would not be shy in keeping in close contact with your vet on the phone. Half a day away is a long way, and they must do what they can to advise you by phone.
Did you give him the benadryl? Maybe cold compresses will help bring the swelling down.
This forum is for humans not pets. You can post in the "ask a doctor" forum pertaining to animal care.
Good luck.
