Behavioral Problem or Physical Problem

Our 12 yr old dog had some "warts" removed from her behind less than a year ago using laser surgery.  The vet sent parts of the "warts" to see if there was any problem.  There wasn't.  In March 2008 we took her to the vet so she could have another look at her.  Again, she couldn't see anything or find anything during a rectal exam.

Lately, she has been pooping in the house, something she never did before. It "seems" like she is aware of what she is doing but we can't be sure.  We're going to take her to the vet to see if there is any problem but I have been wondering if (1) at her age she can't "hold it" till she gets outside and (2) could it be a behavior problem.  She is an older dog but she still learns new things.

Like I said, we're taking her to the vet but in the meantime, was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what the problem might be.

Spoke to the vet about the dog "pooping".  She thought it was due to her spine being effected by arthritis.  She did not seem concerned.  I, however, am freaking out and am going to make an appointment asap.

We thought the dog was unaware that she was pooping but she is aware.

I know she is an "older dog" but I can't imagine being without her and really hope I'm over-reacting.

I'll do that after she goes to the vet.

There haven't been any drastic changes.  I think she just can't hold it as long but want to make sure.

Could be any number of things really.......certainly as they get older they can't hold it as long, my older babies got like that, had to go out more often. But I have a doggie door so they can go when they want, just at night it's closed and they would wake me earlier to go.  Or it could be behavior too, anything "new" going on in the house that might be upsetting her? New additions to the family?  Moving things around, changing furniture etc..?

Also, if she had surgery in that area, in might have weakened her muscle there so she may not be able to hold it as long because of that too. See what the vet says about that, along with her age, they don't often heal as well as they would when younger......just like us.

Take care, and let us know what your vet said ; )
