Have you heard of Atlantoaxial Instability ? When a child who has trisomy 21 wants to enter the Special Olympics they usually must get (or always) the neck x-ray to be sure they don't have this condition. D had the x-ray as an infant and nothing was a concern. Probally the tech wasn't really qualified to read it. But D does have this problem. I attended a Family conference which some specialist said the people they had experience with having the surgery, which entails installing a horse shoe like part in the back of the neck to attach the head more securely. Had major side effects. Like unable to swallow so had to have g tube. Treak etc. Very scary . So thought I would look around for any positive reports from parents.
Well as to the neck surgery, my guess would be to get the best doctor available , I do not know what type of surgery you are planning, is it for a growth? a thyroid? wry neck? my surgery experience is from way back, haven't worked in OR for about 40 years, tell me more about it and I may be able to help you more. I may have to depend on some of you other mothers to tend to this forum for a while, my daughter has ovarian cancer and is terminal, so I will be spending more time with her now. marty
