Nursing problems

I just had a baby boy 9 days ago diagnosed with down syndrome. I am doing my breast to nurse him but he latches on then lets go repeatedly. He has latched on and nursed for about 20 minutes a few times which makes me so happy. When he will not stay latched and nurse I pump my milk and feed him via syringe. Sometimes the milk spills out but overall does well with the syringe feedings. All this is so new and hard for me having a baby with DS. I just want him to be well and healthy.   Thank you for your support :)

Thanks Simplystar :)   Right now he prefers the bottle but at least he is getting breastmilk for whatever amount I can make :)   As long as he is finally eating and getting what he needs :)

many women breast feed and suppliment with pumped milk, if your baby is thriving  then just keep it up, breast milk gets more established  by  3 or 4 weeks, keep giving it a good chance and all will come out just fine.

Thank you so :)   He nurses sometimes and the other times I pump and feed him with a bottle now. Thank you for replying :)

Congrats on your baby! My daughter(DS) had some problems with latching on too. I had to pump and feed her from a bottle, she was not interested in the breast. She was even particular about the nipples on the bottles..it gets better...and my son (not DS), he had some latching problems at first, then he'd get it and do great, then he would "lose" it..(: But after awhile, he got it and I couldn't keep up with him! Be patient..that is the best advice. Good luck!

Congratulation on your baby boy. I just want to say that everything will turn out fine, you'll see. Raising a DS child is like experiencing a new and adventurous journey that will make us become  wiser and stronger in person. Good Luck
