Ear stuffiness still present after 2 rounds of antibiotics

3 weeks ago I went to an emergency clinic because I was experiencing severe dizziness and stuffiness/pressure in my ears. I was diagnosed with otitis media with effusion. I was prescribed Amoxicillin 500mg 3x's a day for 10 days. That treatment didn't clear my symptoms, so I was then prescribed a 5 day treatment of Azithromycin 250mg. I finished that treatment 3 days ago, and the symptoms cleared for a day, but are now back. I have a doctors appointment with my ENT, but its not for a week and a half, and I desperately need some sort of peace of mind. Is it a common thing for two different types of antibiotics not to clear these symptoms, or is there any other condition that could be causing this?

While it's possible that the infection hasn't been fully taken care of even with the two rounds of antibiotics, it sounds definitley like the inflammation has not been taken care of.  It might be possible that this inflammation/stuffiness/fullness is a result of allergies, rather than infection.

You may want to try an over the counter decongestant (if you're able to take them) and see if that helps at all.  An antihistamine might also help.

Please note, if you are taking any meds (other than the antibiotics), or under the care of a physician (other than for the ear infection), PLEASE be sure and talk to your doctor before trying anything, even over the counter meds - to make sure that they would not interfere either with your medical condition/s or your current meds.

I also find sometimes that a saline nasal spray will help reduce ear stuffiness for me if my allergies are acting up - the nasal passages get inflamed and therefore, end up blocking the ears.

Best of luck!
