Recocurring ear infections

When I was younger and slightly stupid I stuck a hard wire in my ear, I definitely touched my ear drum and since then I started getting ear pain. When I finally went to the doctor they said I had an infection but my ear drum seemed fine so I was given antibiotic drops which helped. But since then I have had recocurring ear infections(about one a month), I have been given special ear plugs for water since they seem to come when I get water in my ear but it's annoying having to wear them every time I have a bath/shower or go swimming as I can't hear with them in. The doctors say that my ear infections are just bad luck and not due to what I had stuck in my ear even though prior to that I never had an ear infection. Could I have some underlying infection that hasn't fully cleared? Seeing as they've been giving me the same ear drops for almost 2 years?
