ear infection that won't go away

my 22 month old son got a double ear infection about 6 wks ago was given amoxicillin for ten days infection was still there so did another round of amoxicillin one ear was better the other was the same. so dr gave an inj of rocephihn when seen 2 wks later both ears were infected again. the week before he was to go back for his recheck I noticed he was coughing and that he had vomited figured at that point it was d/t the coughing. the rest of the week he was fine the day after his recheck he again woke up covered in vomit didn't have anymore vomiting till this past sunday. called on call dr said to get him in the next day he was seen the next day and was told (and had already figured) that he had vertigo d/t the infection in his ears and that both ears were still infected was given another antibiotic last Thursday which he has not been able to take d/t needing to take with food and barely eating or not eating at all. the apt on Monday he was given Zofran and was told only to use PRN if he vomited again and to use Benadryl for the dizziness. he woke up vomiting Tuesday morning and had to start using Zofran as a scheduled med otherwise he is vomiting. only had three wet diapers on Tuesday. Wednesday had a few more wet diapers but still not eating at this point noticed he had lost a pound since being seen Monday. went back to the dr today d/t signs of mild dehydration was given prevacid and told he had hyperactive bowel sounds but to keep with the pedialite and Zofran and antibiotic as can. he has an appt with an ent but not for another 2 weeks. i'm at a loss for what to do for my poor child he's not a "chubby" baby so by no means so he have the extra weight to lose. any advice on what could be going on or how else to help him would be great!!!

Hello and hope you are doing well.

If his symptoms are worsening with the antibiotic then the infecting organism may not be susceptible to the antibiotic. Have a culture and sensitivity test done to find out the correct antibiotic that the infecting organism is sensitive to and taking this medication for the required amount of days may help to clear the infection. Also, repeated throat infections can affect the Eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ears to the throat and can cause ear infections. So, take precautions and treat the throat infections at the earliest. For now, continue with the medications and as the infection resolves, his appetite should improve.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
