..the importance of Norwich...

It is the alma mater of Bill W, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Good evening;

Well, I did do my share of beer tending in college and bar tending at family functions...

However, I am mostly, as I wrote, a learned sot.  ,-)

My wife and I are alumni of Norwich University in Vermont, a small military college in the middle of, well, not much of anywhere.

Things have changed greatly over the years, but when I was there, upperclassman could have in their room (per room mate): 1 case of beer, 2 bottles of wine and 1 bottle of distilled spirits.  The legal drinking age was also 18 at the time.  I also come from a family of "hard drinkers."

Alcohol, though, has always (in my adult life) been not just a beverage, but a topic of interest.  This is not just because I like to drink (too much IS in the past), but am also a brewer, vintner and mead-maker.

Fermented beverages play an important place in the history of mankind...some socio-anthropologist think that organized agriculture came about to support the production of beer.

I am glad I survived to regard quality as much better-er than quantity.

take care!

Pip

Sounds like you were a bartender! or a best friend of one... ha ha....

I stick to the one is ok, two is maybe and three you need a therapist to talk to because no one else will like what you have to say... lol...

Or there's always 1 tequila, 2 tequila, 3 tequila, floor....

Cheers!

The general guideline mentioned above is sound advice.

Like anything, different folks react differently to the same substances.

My observations are based on my experience as an educated, sometimes drunkard who knows what he's done to his body, but frankly, didn't care until the last few years.  I used to knock back a full bottle of whiskey or vodka every night.

I can still drink pretty hard (8 - 10 over the course of an evening) and have no ill effect the next day.  My brother, more than 1 or 2 and he'll have blood in his urine.

A much more normal occurrence now is none, one or two...never more than four.

This IS NOT saying I recommend going to your physical limits to see how much you can drink, the more moderate course is best, especially in the long run, for you and those around you.

Gram for gram, ethanol is a very powerful drug; both a painkiller and a depressant.

You do have to look at what constitutes the drink at hand...a whiskey and soda (1 1/2 oz @ 40%) = a glass of table wine (5 oz @ 12%) = a bottle of regular beer (12 oz @ 5%).

Take craft beers for instance.  When I was visiting in Massachusetts this past week, I had a bottle of "Imperial Oatmeal Stout."  A dry stout (like Guinness) is normally in the 4 - 5 percent alcohol range.  The one I drank was 11%, more like a table wine, so thusly equal to 4+ standard alcohol servings in one 22 oz bottle.  It was the only drink I had that evening, and we were spending the evening at home.

Port is a fortified red wine, which is in the 18 - 20 percent range.  Drinking a standard glass of this would be equal to 1 1/2 servings or so of alcohol.  Port is normally served in smaller glasses and sipped as an after dinner drink.

Brandy is distilled from wine, so is therefor usually in the 20 - 25 percent range.

Those oh, so, tasty mixed drinks...can have the equivalent of anywhere from 1 - 6 alcohol servings (or more) in one glass.

Read up on what it is you intend to imbibe.  This is definitely a case of what you don't know can kill you, and possibly someone else.

take care - Pip

I believe the general rule is no more than 2 alcoholic drinks a day for a male (one for a female).  They say that red wine is the healthiest as it has cholesterol lowering properties.
