eyes double vision, caused by detached muscle

About 3 yrs ago, I had a muscle detach in my eye.  I was afraid of surgery and never had it fixed.  However I have had double vision for the past 3 yrs,  " I can control the eyes when driving and do not see double," but normally the eyes become very strained from trying to see day to day.  I get headaches as well
I do have excellent vision in each eye individually. I have been told about the possibility of eye glasses with prisms maybe helping. the double vision , I am aftraid to  go to an optometrist in case of losing my drivers  license,
A friend tells me that as long as I can see at least 20/40 when both eyes are focased I am safe.
She also tells me that eyeglasses with prisms, might help.
Is it worth the risk to see an optician.

Thank you Mary

Muscles generally don't detach from the eye unless there is severe trauma. Double vision is not a criteria for losing your license. The visual factors are best corrected visual acuity in one eye and peripheral field of vision.

I would suggest you see an eye MD ophthalmologist that specializes in eye muscle (strabismus) problems. If you live in USA you can find one near you at www.geteyesmart.org
