Afferent Pupillary Disorder

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could explain what causes APD. I was reveiwng my notes from last opthomologist appt. and it is listed me as having APD, although I don't understand the numbers. It also listed me as having subtle Facial Ptosis.

Thanks Jenny

It's easiest and most simple form: more light impulses are being carried through one optic nerve than the other. Thus when a penlight is directed into the eye with the APD the pupil does not constrict as much as when it is directed into the eye without the APD. The test is sometimes called the swinging flashlight test. A positive APD generally denotes optic nerve problems.

You know this is one of the reason's I dislike acrynyms and abbreviations. When used in conjuction with a glasses RX as yours obviously is it does not mean afferent pupillary defect but a measurement for the glasses having to do with PD   or pupillary distance. (how wide apart your eyes are). Call and confirm this. I think you can stop worrying.

Hello and Thank You,

I do not mean to be a pest but I have a follow up question if you do not mind
I was just looking at my reports and realized I actually had 2 seperate reports of APD:

in 8/09 I saw a regular optomertrist who recorded the following:

(OD)                                                    (OS)
                                                          (+025)
+050, -25, 75                             +050, +050, +050

-APD 4.5  mm

In 9/10 I saw an opthomologist and he recorded the following: but different from the above

-025, -025,061                          +025, -025,084
(-025)                                                 (+025)

He also recorded
-APD 4.5 mm   NI

Is this infact APD?
what would the negative sign mean in front of (APD)
Also does APD tend to stay the same all the time if you have it or does it go away?

I apologize for all the questions and understand if you do not have time to answer

Regards JibJen

Thank You,

I am currently being evaluated for MS due to highly suggestive results of positive MRI results. Can MS cause this even if Optic lesions are not always present?

Tahnks for your time.
