Astigmatism ?

I just had my eyes examined. I didn't realize how bad my eyes had gotten to be.  I couldn't read anything on the chart with my left eye. The Dr. could only correct it to 20/70.  This is what my perscription says for the left eye -4.00 -1.50 177 prism1d Base BD The right eye can be corrected to 20/20.  He said the right eye has taken over for the left eye like a lazy eye. I know I have astigmatism and am near sighted.
My question is this . Now that it has been brought to my attention I am finding out just fow bad my eye is. When I cover my right eye I get a starburst pattern with or with out my glasses where ever I focus. There is also a light dot in the middle like you get when someone flashes a light bulb in your face. Is this just bad astigmatism? I know it is not any disease. The Dr. did both Optomap and dialated my eyes as well and he said I was free from any type of those kind of problems.  I would go back to the Dr. to check up on the problem but I only get one vision visit per year.

Hi Dr,

How can one find they have this.  By seeing a normal optomotrist be able to detect such problem?

Thank you for suggesting that I see an  ophthalmologist. I went to see one today. I have a macular hole. He said I have to have surgery ASAP I am seeing a retina surgeon tomorrow

My last eye exam was March 5, 2009. The Dr. said it was ambyopia. I thought that that was something that you were born with. My left eye was always able to be corrected to 20/20 until this last exam. I am thinking of seeing an  opthalmologist. I know one that was so good with my mom.

When was your last eye exam?  Is this ambyopia?

I would suggest you pay for an eye exam with an ophthalmologist.
