Changing multifocal lens to monofocal lens after surgery

I had cataract surgery 2 months ago and have multifocal lens.  Until now I am not able to adjust to the halos as they continue to bother me.  My doctor recommends that I change to monofocal lens.  Is this advisable. Pls reply asap. Thanks.

I would suggest you get a second and third opinion from an experienced cataract/IOL surgeon as soon as possible.

Thanks Dr. Hagan.

One doctor I talked to said it can be done but is risky to do.  The doctor who operated on me said it is very safe and can be done anytime.  This doctor who operated on me said he will simply cut one end of the multifocal and pull it out and replace with the monofocal.

Have you done this before?

I have not had a patient that has required IOL exchange because of wrong power; displacement; dysphotopsia or inability to adjust to a multifocal or accommodating IOL.

I have had some that did not adjust to monofocal vision and who had lasik on the more myopic reading eye.

Does this mean you had replaced a monofocal iol or the adjustment you made on the monofocal vision was thru lasik on the more myopic eye?  I am sorry I did not quite understand what you meant.  I am very concerned with my situation as it is getting me so depressed.  Would you personally suggest that I exchange my multifocal to monofocal iol? Thanks.

We did lasik on the reading eye and converted it to mid range and the other was for distance (i.e. distance refractive error 0.00 mid range -1.00 before last was -2050)

I cannot advise you what to do and suggest strongly you get 2nd and 3rd opinions

Thanks Dr. Hagan.

I wish to tell you that I have consulted 2 other very experienced surgeons and both have advised me not to take the risks.  I am 'programming' my brain to just accept and hope to adjust to the halos.  I am also limiting my nights out.

Then there is a good to excellent chance that 6-9 months out you'll be doing much better.

I apologized for this late reply. But Thank you Dr. Hagan.  I really do hope so.  However, I had been depressed because of this.  I can't keep my mind off the fact that I wasn't fully apprised by my doctor with these multi focal realities.  I feel duped and I allowed it. Now I don't want feel like going out at night.  The halos scare me.

Seek out the best 2nd opinion from an esteemed ophthalmologist that you can get him in to see. Most important protect what vision he has left in the bad eye and especially the uninjured eye from disease and and injury
