Dilated Pupils

If anyone has ANY suggestions about what could be going on with me please respond to this. About 6 weeks ago I started noticing in the mirror that my eyes were dilating. It not just in the dark that they are dilated. I have NO color in my eyes whatsoever and even when Im in the light or outside in the sunlight they are still huge. They have been like this for 6 weeks. My hands shake really bad, my heart races, and sometimes I feel like Im going to pass out. I feel like im on speed and I cant sleep ever. Everything sounds like it is buzzing and I cant focus on anything ever. I always feel like im staring into space and cant pay attention to anything. Ive been in the ER twice and been to my doctors office also. They put me on a beta blocker to lower my blood pressure and heart rate that I have to take 3 times a day. My doctor also said it could be anxiety so he gave me a "sedative" that Im taking 3 times a day. Ive been on these for almost 2 weeks now and they arent working. It seems like everything is getting worse and worse. They ruled out any sort of thyroid problem, but I was wondering if I should go see a neurologist or if anyone knows what could be causing these symptoms. Thank you for your help...

Hello Manda,
Dilation of the pupils is governed by adrenaline.  And your symptoms certainly all  suggest excessive adrenaline production.

One disorder that should be considered is a pheochromocytoma.  This is an benign, adrenaline-producing tumor of the adrenal gland.  Very treatable.

Other possibilities are genetic defects within the adrenaline pathway (such as MAO deficiency) or within the adrenaline receptors themselves - such as the supercoupled beta 2- adrenergic rec
eptors found in some people with Mitral Valve Prolapse Dysautonomia Syndrome (MVP Syndrome).

Insist on testing of your catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline) and don't stop until this has been done.  If they are abnormal, insist on specific treatment.

Don't believe anyone who tells you that your cathecholamines are high because you have some psychiatric disorder or another.  This is absolute rot.

Just get the high cathecholamines to normal levels and the "psychiatric" issues (i.e., panic attacks) will dissapear.

Warmest Regards!
