This retrospective study reports on the largest sample size yet of patients (208 eyes)  who underwent pars plana vitrectomy, ILM peeling and C3F8 tamponade for idiopathic macular holes without subsequent facedown posturing. All patients also underwent phacoemulsification with IOL implantation during macular hole surgery. At one year, the closure rate was 81.3 percent and vision improved from 20/200 to 20/40. They conclude that isolating the macula from vitreous fluid with a large long-lasting gas-fill may render postoperative posturing unnecessary.

Best of luck. A "good result" with macular hole surgery is far different than cataract surgery. Thus if vision is stabilized or does not get worse at macular hole surgery it can be said to be successful, if it gets better then it can be said to be very successful and if perfect normal vision is obtained then that absolutely fabulous result.

I'm lucky to have found this post. A close person of mine ...my father has done the ppv yesterday and  professor ordered to sleep face up...aaand all I found on the internet is sleeping face down.. Thought  we didnt understand the professor and was really worried.. till now he is still seeing blurred.. I'm hoping he will recover by time.. cos unfortunately he doesn't see so much from the other eye :(

This study is to help retina surgeons that do that type of macular hole closure learn which eyes require the ordeal of face down positioning and which can do without. Thus there is no place special you go to have it done, what it means is that fewer people will require face down. If you have a retina MD discuss with him/her
