Will solar retinopathy have side effects?

Hi my 19 year old son recently (stupidly) looked into the sun and now has a central blind spot, the eye doctors said it was solar and it could heal but could take a long time. My concern is will this turn into cataracts or eye flashes for example, or some other eye disorder. Or is it simply “it is what is is and nothing more”. Thankyou

No other eye diseases.   During the USA total eclipse a year or so ago there were a lot of cases but rare permanent damage.  Be sure he knows better than to do that again.
Thankyou so much you have no idea how much your expertise helps, it’s quite impossible finding any information online after such a random accident

Cataracts are the least of his problems.  No it will not cause cataracts but the blurred central vision or black/blank/blurred spot sometimes does NOT go away.  He needs to be followed by an ophthalmologist eye MD with regular macular OCT and Amsler grid testing.
