For most people they are not necessary and they are expensive. Your residual myopia acts like a built in reading glass i.e. the myopia does .5 and .75 worth of focusing that your eye doesn't have to do. that's why middle age myopes start to remove their glasses for reading or computer work.

You do need to have an eye examination by a physician eye MD ophthalmologist. It could represent a need for glasses and diseases or conditions such as dry eye or blepharitis need to be checked for. The computer will not damage you eye but can make them tired or sore.   Also try looking away from the screen every 15 minutes, focus on something very far away or out the window and blink firmly 6-8 times to moisturize the eye. Also try using 3 to 4 times per day an artifical tear such as Systane, Blink, Refresh, Soothe XP
