Lentis M Plus

Hi, I am a 54 year old male. I had two Lentis M Plus lenses implanted to improve my vision. I was told I wasn't suitable for Laser correction because my cornea's were to thin. I had the first implant on May 12th 2010, in my right eye. I had the second implant on May 19th 2010, in my left eye.
From the time of the transplants up untill now, I have suffered with the normal post-op conditions. In late june I also developed Cystoid Macular Oedema. I was treated with drops (Acular) and tablets (Acetazolamide) which partially cleared the condition. I have been told the thickness of my macular is still to thick. I am still taking the tablets but no drops. I am going back to the clinic in London tomorrow to be re-assessed and may have to have injections in my eyes if no improvement.
My reading vision is really good at a distance of about 18 inches in good light. My distance vision is a little blurred which i have been told can be corrected with laser top up.

My eyes feel dry quite a lot, sometimes a little sore.

I also suffer with ghosting and really bad halo's on flourescent lights, traffic lights, car brake lights. Also, light rings and starburst effect in my eyes when venturing out at night. Can these conditions ever improve? If so how long will it take as i feel my life is on hold. I am a profesional HGV driver and haven't worked since the Implants.

Are these conditions as a result of a infection in my eyes or just a direct result of light reflecting on the lenses?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks

Regards
Phil

Dont even think having laser surgery yet!it took my vision 6months to clear, same as you close up good far  distance blurry,it will improve....with the halos and starburst they can take up to 12months to clear, and can be annoying,im at 12months now visions good slightly blurry in morning when first wake up goes in an hour, tho
With the halos and starburst they have thinned right out, still slight starburst when first look at light for a couple a seconds then disappear as pupil adjusts,if i look away and look again it will do it again then disappear  ,but vision sharp, you have just started recovery,I had infections, sore eyes, etc, notice more improvement after drops are finished,my improvements was 3.5months to 4months vision started getting better very slightly weekly. You will go through stages of have you done the right thing and worry,or shall I have laser treatment, you have just got to ride it out and be patient, even if offered laser treatment decline ,until you get at least 9 months ,because laser can make things worst with star burst etc and can rob you of your night vision.i.e dry eye..reshaped cornea, etc.
Finally I can say at first I thought i have not done the right thing with the problems like you have, but now at 12months yes I have just ride it out ALSO GET SOME FLAXSEED OIL 1 TEASPOON IN MORNING AND NIGHT will work wonders on your eyes for healing and dry eye trust me and GOOD LUCK! to you

I was sorry to read about your eye problems, Phil, and I hope by now that the CMO has now gone away.  Just out of interest, where did you go for your surgery?  I had M-Plus lenses inserted in Aug. & Sept. last year and have been struggling with them ever since.  I was not told about all the possible side effects and am very angry that such information was not passed to me by the surgeon.  If I had known, I am positive that I would not have gone ahead with the procedure.  I am totally reliant on Alphagan drops during the evening, whether I'm driving or just watching television.  I have now also started putting them in during the daytime because when I go into a shop I get the same awful ghosting problems with lights, and it drives me around the bend!  In order to read more than just a few lines of print, I have to be in good daylight.  Even then, I have to angle the page just right because I get an effect like sun shimmering on water and this makes is very hard to see clearly.  This sort of concentration is hard going and it takes me ages to read just one page of print - ughh!  I have some mild strength reading glasses, but find that these only help for a short period of time.  I seem to be constantly putting them on and off my face whilst reading.

I went back to see my surgeon recently and said I wanted the lenses exchanged for monofocal ones, but he frightened the life out of me by telling me about all the things that could go wrong and that I could go blind!  Not having my partner with me at the time of my visit, I had no-one to turn to when the surgeon was putting the wind up me!  I was so upset, I didn't know what to say and just sat there crying.  On that visit, he checked my eyes thoroughly with various machines and said that the lenses were correctly positioned in my eyes.  That's as maybe, but I told him that I didn't want to use Alphagan for the rest of my life.  I worry that using this once or twice every day will damage my vision in the long term.  [Does anyone reading this Comment know if this is a dangerous practice?]  Anyway, he has asked me to try this out for a while and then come back to him on the matter.

By the way, in order to get rid of the astigmatism I had in my right eye, the surgeon performed PRK laser surgery, but this hasn't helped with the ghosting at all, unfortunately.

I am not familiar with this implant.  However,  the cystoid macular edema (CME) is a complication of intraocular surgery.  My treatment is Durezol four times per day and Xibrom two times per day.  Acular is an older drop and not as effective as Xibrom.  Durezol is the newest steroid.  If you can not get Durezol, use Pred Forte (non-generic) four to six times per day.  I personally have not had much luck with Acetazolomide-I tried it 20 years ago).  However, some of my esteemed colleagues believe in it.  If drops do not work you should consider an Avastin injection.
