First, I want to thank the professionals and the community who use this sight for the great help I received (from reading) before getting cataract surgery. This place is a Godsend.
Before going into surgery I knew:
1) Don't be a perfectionist
2) Be sure I use a surgeon who used IOL Master measuring equipment
3) Go to a surgeon who concentrates most of their practice on cataract surgeries
4) Measurement for IOL lenses is not exact, though usually very good
My Doctor's (Dr Keefe @ Loma Linda University in Colton California) splits her practice between cataract surgery and pathology. She assured me that approximately 50% of her practice was devoted to cataract surgery. She gave me a choice of the Alcon SA60 standard lense or the SN60WF aspheric (I chose the SN60WF).
The IOL Master was not able to measure my left eye, so I also had an immersion test.
Right eye first, planning for Plano, got excellent midrange, distance is slightly blurry (just slightly). I am a computer programmer and this turned out to be a good option as I can see my screens without glasses now. Left eye second (4 weeks later) and it is nearly perfect at distance and performs well at mid range, although not as good as my right. Between the two eyes I have very good distance vision as the right eye is now able to contribute even though it is not entirely clear. So I now have mini mono vision that allows me to see clearly at all distances except reading. I am very very pleased. This outcome exceeded my lowered expectations (due to reading here). I can drive at night quite comfortably and find my low light vision is also very good.
I am enjoying every aspect of these new eyes with one single exception which quite frankly I can live with if it remains as is. It has been one week since my final eye (left) was operated on. I am catching what seems like edge light noise. It often looks like a flashing or pulsing at the extreme left and right areas of my vision. It is most noticeable when there are bright light sources in those areas. The right eye does seem to have diminished in this regard just a little. It only happens when I am moving my eyes from one direction to the other or when things are moving past me (like when driving). If I do not move my eyes and am in a fixed environment (not driving) it does not happen.
So my question is, is this part of the healing process? Can I expect it to most likely go away given more time to heal? Or is this something I need to learn to live with? Again, I would gladly take this small issue as part of my continuing condition in exchange for the excellent vision I am enjoying.
Again, HUGE thanks for all the great information here. I loved knowing enough to talk intelligently with my doctor and to make an informed decision.
