Sclera Abrasion

I was in the bank assisting my mother, and all of a sudden I felt like I had something irratating my right eye, and as much I tried to resist rubbing my eye, I finally gave in and gave my eye a good, but gentle rub.  The person at the that wa assisting us gave me a tissue to blot my eye, but my eye felt like I had sandpaper on it, and the woman at the bank became alarmed that my eye become so inflamed.  When I got home about an hour later, I took a look at it in the mirror and my eye as completely red and puffy and and there was a large "bump" on the sclera on the outside of the eye.  I am very concerned about this.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Thank you doctor, very much appreciated.  You had mentioned the "eyelid", did you mean the eye??

Thanks!

If you have no pain and no blurred vision you likely will be just fine. Most probably in the efforts to remove the irritant you broke one of the tiny blood vessels on the surface of the eye (the ones that dilate when your eyes are bloodshot). It's like a bruise on the surface of the eyelid. Like a bruise it will take 5-10 days to clear up. If you have pain and blurred vision you need to see an eye MD ophthalmolgoist.
