Chronic eye strain

About a month ago, I was requred to work on a computer in a darkened corner of a brightly lit room for a full week.  When the lights in the area were turned off, I immediately felt severe strain and pain in one eye. My eye doctor said that it was insufficient lightly and close up work should have good lighting.  I'm out of that condition and have good light again, however the eye pain is not going away.  It feels like a deep gnawing pain.  Eye doctor wrote a script but general practitioner told me not to use it that I didn't need it before and the conditions that caused it were unhealthy. However, it's not going away and I need to function. I tried the glasses and they seem overwhelmingly difficult to adjust to. They make things seem more bright than normal, it does clear up vision a bit but it feels like extreme correction to me even though it's not.  I have 20/18 vision in one eye and 20/30 in the other so it's never been am issue.  I have minor astigmatism in th e 20/30 eye but it's not bothered me historically. Should I keep trying the glasses?  How long should it take to get my vision back to normal from prior to the bad conditions and the eye pain to subside?  I am at a loss.  The eye dr told me the script is not intended to make any major corrections to my vision.

Just a couple of questions:

1.  Is the pain always in the same eye?

2.  Is it constant, day *and* night, or does it come and go?

3.  Do you have any pain anywhere else on the same side of the head as the eye pain?

The lighting conditions you worked in would not cause permanent damage to the nor make you need glasses.   You would need to look elsewhere for the cause of persistent pain.
