Muscle cramps

I am a 48 y/o female with muscle cramps onset 1 week ago. They occur legs, arms, feet, hands, very painful. I am not sure why I have them. Never have before. I take vitamins, regularly and eat correctly. Also take otc meds for menopausal women, that contain calcium. I have tried more calcium (powder dissolve in h20) to help,(this helps my 10 y/o son with his leg cramps). Nothing is helping. I have a hx of fibromyalgia (recent diagnosis)and hypothyroidism. On Armour 75mg q day. last tsh 0.8 (on 90mg), MD told me to back off to 75mg again. I also have night sweats, probably due to menopause.
Is there something I am missing or can help me?
Thank you,
Dede

Thank you for visiting the Family Practice Forum,

The first thought I have when someone complains of muscle cramps is a possible deficincy of Potassium.

So ... if you have your doctor check your potassium level and it is normal you may be experiencing muscle cramps due to thyroid imbalance or menopause. Really ... my main thoughts are to have your potassium and thyroid function tested, and if normal, talk to your doctor about a medication known as "Quinine" which is very helpful in the treatment of muscle cramps, particularly those which occur at night.

In my evaluation by a Naturapathic medical dr. I was found to have an electrolyte deficiency. Taking these, eliminated the night cramping in my calves and feet. Maybe this would be the solution to your problem as well.

Have you had your sodium and potassium levels checked recently?  Sometimes improper levels of those can increase cramping.  Also, try to be sure to have appropriate levels of water in your body.  I'm sure the doctor will have more suggestions.  Good luck!
