I live in the North East and have been plagued with hayfever these past 2 weeks. When is ragweed generally prevalent in the North East? Thanks.

Thank you for your question and for visiting the Family Practice Forum.
Ragweed "season" in the Northeast as well as in many other parts of the US is most prevalent in the months of August and September.

Ragweed, a tall, branched plant, is found throughout the lower 48 states on dry fields, pastures, roadsides, and construction sites. A native of North America, it also grows on every other continent except Antarctica.

Ragweed is a hairy, coarse-looking plant featuring unattractive flowers, an unpleasant smell, and no redeeming qualities. Its name was derived from the ragged appearance of its leaves. Short ragweed can bloom and spew pollen into the air when only a few inches tall, while the giant ragweed reaches twelve feet in height.

Ragweed, is an "allergen". Like any allergen a person may be allergic to, the condition associated with exposure and subsequent allergy to this "allergen" is termed "ALLERGIC RHINITIS".

Allergic rhinitis (AR) refers to an irritation of the nasal passages resulting in symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, congestion and cough. The symptoms are caused by the body's "over-response" to a substance (allergen) that it finds offensive. Although commonly seen in the fall, symptoms of allergic rhinitis may occur at ANY time of the year. Ragweed is the main allergen seen in the fall months. Tree and grass allergies are more prevalent in the spring and summer months with mold allergies more prevalent in the winter months. There are variations in the prevalence of these different types of allergens depending on what part of the country you live.
Here in the 21st century, we are fortunate enough to have many effective means of controlling these allergy symptoms. Many medicines are now available which are not only effective, but also have very few potential side effects. To help control symptoms of AR:
Step 1 : Eliminate exposure to irritants (allergens)
1. Vacuum frequently, especially in the bedroom.
2. Eliminate your exposure to SMOKE - avoid public areas where there is excessive
smoke.
3. Use your air conditioner and make sure the filter is clean.
4. Use
