Clomid and My Age

Hello everyone-
I am new at this site and very excited about finding it.  I am 41 years old and my husband is 45.  We are both only children and have no kiddos.  We have had 3 miscarriages, the last one being over 3 years ago.  We finally decided we were at a good place to try one more time, one more year, to have a child of our own.  I have to admit I am a little scared because I know how devastating a miscarriage can be and I am not sure how I would handle one more.  But I am willing to try.  So with my history here, the dr I am seeing has put me on Clomid 50 mg for this month.  I have taken it before but we were so tired of trying at that point I don't think we really followed through with all the instructions.  Has anyone on this forum had any luck with Clomid at my age?  I know they say 40 is the new 30 but I have a hard time getting my body to believe that some mornings.  What do you all think?  Is 40 plus in age too old to try for the first time?  Looking forward to some feedback.. good luck to all of you.

Hi, I can relate to your situation. I have been ttc for 5 yrs and have also had 3 m/c. I was on clomid 4 times and it didn't work for me because it thinned my lining. I have heard, although I'm not sure if it's true, that clomid thinning the uterine lining can become more of a problem the older a woman is. I am 34, but I have low ovarian reserve, which basically means I have the same fertility issues as if I was a few years older than I really am.

Based on my own experience, I would highly recommend doing monitoring (ultrasound) if you are on clomid, to make sure that there are not any issues like it thinning the lining. It is possible that clomid could work just fine for you. But if clomid is thinning your lining and you take it multiple times, it can take a while for the lining to recover, even after you stop the clomid. At 41 you still have a window left when you could get pregnant, but you don't have too much time to waste. If a certain treatment isn't working for you, you probably want to find out right away so that you can try to switch to something that will work better.

In the end we decided we were going to do everything possible to try to make it work for a year, and if it didn't work in that time, we would stop trying and possibly think about adoption. I took a bunch of supplements that are supposed to help with egg quality, did acupuncture, and switched to injectable medications (gonal-f) after clomid did not work for me. I finally got pregnant again on my 4th injectable cycle and am currently 6wks (praying this one hangs on!!). Best of luck to you!

Hello just wanted to add my comments, I am also 41 yrs, trying to conceive our second child(had Alfie naturally at 39 but was a miracle as have had eating problems for years and told i would never have a baby)I have never had periods due to low body weight but still conceived our son.Anyway as I dont ovulate regularly our dr has put me back on clomid(had it before and it gave me cysts) to see if it may help now we have had a break from it.Had ultrasound and it showed 2 small follicles on left ovary which dr said was a good thing, not taking it this month and will be scanned again to see whats what in a weeks time, clomid works for some but not all, best wishes melissax

I have been on Clomid more times than I can recall!  My daughter (3 in May) was conceived our very first month on Clomid 50mg.  Fast forward to about 18 months ago and my cycle never came back after nursing her so I finally starting ovulating on 100mg.  We conceived again this past April, but that sadly ended in a D&C.  Again, I don't have a cycle and my OBGYN has referred me onto an RE.  I'm hoping to get on Femara, as I've heard that that is more successful once Clomid isn't working.

I never had any side effects from using Clomid...but two of the biggies that may occur is a thinning of the uterine lining and creating a hostile environment in your cervical mucous.  Femara is not supposed to do these two things.

I am 39 and also fighting the clock!!

best of luck to you!!

I haven't tried clomid so I cannot answer any questions on that. I just want to assure you that you are not too old to be trying for your first child. If you go to the Pregnancy 35+ forum you will see many woman who are trying and many who have been successful with getting pregnant and having their first child over the age of 40. There is also a TTC over 40 group http://www.medhelp.org/forums/TTC-Over-40/show/516

I copied and pasted that link so I hope it works.

Best of luck to you. I hope you get a bfp soon!!!

Hi :-)
I'm prob not going to be a useful answer, but I just wanted to say that from what I've read, clomid is used for all women all ages. I am 23 and I gave been put on clomid, and I know a few women in mid 30's that have tried it too.

What is the reason for your use of clomid? Are you not ovulating?

Ssbd :-)
