Anyone's hubby has abnormal semen analysis?

First of all, I'd like to wish everyone ttc much luck. I'm in the same boat too. This month marks 1 year of trying. My hubby recently had SA done, and the result came back abnormal. I don't know what exactly b/c the doctor told me this on the phone, something about not enough alive sperms and not enough movements in those live ones. Have anyone experienced this and what did you do to improve? Anyone ended up pregnant? My doctor ordered another test in 2 weeks and if it comes back abnormal again, he wants hubby to see a urologist. So I guess we can't try until this is resolved.

Thanks Ladies!

Don't know your Dr or RE's protocols but Prog testing and HSG are normal test to check to see if there maybe some fertility factors on your side..

Prog test is simple blood test. HSG is a little more detailed where they run a type of Dye into your tubes to make sure there is no blockage in your tubes. They also check size and condition. Normal protocol for my RE after that is usually a clomid dosage and trigger for a few months so you can get pregnant on your own. Keep us posted.. If you have any other questions please ask...I've been poked and prodded for 2 years.. I think I've been thru all the testing there is only to find out DH is the problem...UUGHHHH

Thanks Ladies for helping me. I feel better knowing it's not that bad, and there are other possibilities. I was blaming him ever since we got the result. I don't know if this is something that affect his result or not, but I brought the specimen to the lab myself, and it took me almost an hour to get the paper work done before I finally handed in the bottle to the lab tech. So it took about 1hr and 30min between collecting and handling to the lab. They let him do it at home. He's very shy when it comes to this.

This is my new ob/gyn. My old one wanted me to continue to try naturally for 6 months. My new one ordered these tests. He mentioned Progesterone test, Semen Analysis, HSG, and then Clomiq. I didn't hear him saying IUI or IVF as options. I haven't met an RE. Is this someone we can go on our own or need reference from the ob/gyn?
Thanks all for your time and good luck to everyone.

Same issue with my DH,, We did IVF ( that is when he finally got sa done ) and did not get pregnant (  progestrone supplement failed) but after 2 years of trying with clomid and trigger we are starting Fertilaid for both of us Tuesday. DH was a smoker for YEARS and is on the heavy set side so I am praying that the supplement helps increase his motility and morph. My DH count is fine  He stopped smoking back in april so keeping fingers crossed  that the vitamins help! Keep us posted

I agree with the others.  The count looks great.  Even if only 25% are motile, 25% of 149million is about 37million!  The morphology % looks good too.  It might be a good idea to see the urologist and get a second opinion and maybe a second test, but I'd keep up the BD'ing!  :)  Good luck.

yea that looks great! : )    i know with us the volume varies completely from month to month! and likely the volume is less when they are well ya know having to do everything for a cup and all!  especially at first when they aren' t used to it.. unfortuantely its a monthly occurance for us now! plus volume woulnd' tseem to mattter if the count was still great i woulnd't think! good luck! : )

WOW I would see what teh urologist says because these numbers look great to me. Yes the volume is a little low but his count is awesome. 149mil thats great. I wouldn't see why you would have any problems with IUI is you chose do do that. It relatively cheap and I think well worth it. I would see a RE if you haven't already. And talk about IUI.

Hi again,

I now just got a copy of the result from the doctor office.
Here are the numbers:
1. Volume: 1.5cc
2. Count: 149,000,000/cc
3. Motility: 25% 2+ - 3+
                5% 1-2
               70% non-motile
4. Morphology: 60% normal forms seen
5. Viability: 18% viable forms seen

Summary: Abnormal semen based on slightly decreased volume, decreased motility, and decreased viability

My question: Is this something that can be helped by diet/lifestyle changes, so we can try naturally?

Thanks again.

Thank you so much everyone for answering my questions. Never thought making a baby would be this difficult, and all those younger years I was always afraid of getting pregnant just by the silliest things we did.

I will have to do some more reading about IVF and IUI. I don't know what they are.

bree08: Good luck on your first IUI. Please let us know how it went and hopefully we'll see your BFP soon. Wish you luck!!!

lmcrt: I'm sorry about your girl issues. Hope IVF is working out for you and you'll get your BFP soon.  Wish you luck!!!

bny807: I just read your profile. I'm very sorry about your miscarry, but I'm happy that IUI worked out well for you. Good luck and thank you for responding.

Hello! Yes, my dh also had anbnormal SA ( and i have a lot of issues as well, so we never imagined we'd both be contributors to the challenge!)   he had very very low morph of only 2% and our initial SA decreased motilty as well.. we repeated in 4 weeks and only the morphology was still below average at only 2%.. he went to the urologist, and they said there was nothing to be done. that we would have to do IVF with ICSI... he said that "typically" things like motility and count can be helped, wether it be by diet, exercise, stop smoking, no hot tubs or vitamins.. but morphology many times will remain the same and they are unable to really help this problem.well my RE said he had seen people get preg with IUI with a morph this low (techincally it needs to be above 5% for IUI) and we have gotten preg twice with IUI...So many things are possible! : )  GOOD LUCK! hope all works out!!

Mary My DH has an abnormal SA as well. Low count and motility which is what your DH's meant. It just depends how low the numbers are as to what your chances are. Normal count is 20 million and normal motility is 50%. If your DH has at least 10mil sperm count you could do iui if lower than 10 mil. then IVF. My hubby was borderline his first SA he had 10mil and his second 2 weeks late he had 6mil. So we are doing IVF. Call and ask what his numbers were and then post them so we could all help out.

Hi Mary- My DH also has abnormal sperm. He was diagnosed with a varicocele. My DH's count, morphology and motility are all below the normal ranges. I know things like diet can effect the quality of the sperm. I've also learned the varicocele's are more common than I thought. I've heard of people getting pregnant with low counts. DH and I are doing our first IUI next month. Good luck to you. I hope you get answers soon :)
