Confused, what to do next?

Hello everyone I'm new to this and new to this site.  I am searching for answers, input, direction anything!  Here's my story.  (sorry it's long)   When I was 15 or 16 I was put on birth control ( I am now 23yo)  due to my long, heavy periods...I would get my periods for 2 weeks at a time and they would be extremely heavy and very painful that at times I'd end up in the ER for pain medication and once they mentioned I might have had a cyst that pooped on my ovary.  I got married in June of 2007 and went off birth control in october of 2007 and we started trying to conceive right then.   I have a hunch i would have a hard time getting pregnant but now it's really starting to set in.  Since being off birth control i've missed a period and been really off schedule.  I am very very late this time around (again!) and I've taken two tests and they both say negative.  Will my female parts ever act normal!?!?!?  We want to be pregnant in the worst way and this is weighing on us day and night.   My mother in law had a hard time getting pregnant too so she talked to me about taking my basal temperature every morning and tracking my ovulation that way so we've been doing that too and that doesn't make sense with my messed up system either.   I'm wondering what we do next?  I have my regular OB appt in march and should I get tested to see if I can even conceive children??? What tests would they do?  Do I need to call ahead and tell them that I want whatever that test is to be done?   Thanks for listening and I hope someone can help us...hope to hear from someone soon.

As someone else said, most fertility specialists won't really do much for you if you are under 35 and have tried to conceive for less than a year.  It looks like you've only been trying for 4 months or so?  You might try charting your temps and trying to predict your ovulation with a kit first to see if that helps.

To be honest, if you eventually seek out medical help, I might look into talking with a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) instead of a regular OB.  It sounds to me like you've had problems for a long while, and an RE is trained especially in infertility and how to treat problems with your period.  Because you have painful menses and trouble with cycle length, it is likely hormonal so insurance would cover something like that too.

With an RE, you just make an appointment, and they'll pretty much guide you on what to say, because they know exactly what you're there for.  Typically they will set you up with what the other's have said.. a semen analysis for hubby, and an HSG for you to rule those two possibilities out.  They may also look at your hormone levels with blood tests.  If all comes out normal, I suspect they may try you on clomid, a mild fertility drug.

Until then, it wouldn't hurt to discuss your concerns with your OB given your history.

Good luck to you!

Sheri

Just come right out and say what you just said to us and they will take it from there.
They hear it all the time.
I think your bggest obstical will be that you are young and you have not been trying for a year yet.

Welcome to the forum!!

You can find most of the acronyms and abbreviations at:
http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/acronyms.html

HSG is a test when they put dye in your tubes to see if they are open.  If your tubes are blocked you may need a laparoscopy to unblock them or ivf.

SA=semen analysis

I just don't know what to say when I got the OB doc.  I mean I've always had issues but I just feel like something is wrong.  DO I just go in and ask her if she can run some fertility tests or what do I ask?

I agree with the ladies, let your OB know what your concerns are and get an ovulation kit.
This forum is pretty cool and you will be able to learn alot from the ladies experience and knowledge of certain areas.

SA is a semen analysis. your OB can order it or he can ask his primary even.

In terms of charting, many women on this forum use www.fertilityfriend.com/ It shows how to do it, and you can even ask others to look at it online and give them their opinion on when you surged. Hope these resources help!

Hope it helps!

HI
Welcome to the site. I'm kind of new here, and not as knowledgable as some of the other awsome women here, but I'll share anyway!
I do know that under 30, they won't usually consider you as having infertiliy problems until you have been ttc for a year.
You said you went off BC in june, right? i would def. go to your OB next month and talk to him, share your concerns. I would think the firstthing would be to have your husband SA checked, and then go from there.
Def, keep up with the charting, there is a website a lot of women here use to assist in charting. I'll try to find the link for you.
Also if you can afford it, I would try buying ovulation pedictor kts/tests, I love them. I personally do not chart (yet) but I really like the OPK's.
I'm sure you will get better input from others.

First, I am really sorry you have to struggle!  I know how painful and emotionally draining this can be.  Your OB will probably ask for some blood tests to check whether you are ovulating and will do an u/s.  You may also do HSG to check if your tubes are blocked.  Your dh will probably have to test as well.  Having irregular periods is a bad sign since that may mean you are not ovulating.  Your doc may prescribe clomid or something like that to make you more regular.  Also, with your painful periods you shuld not rule out endometriosis for infertility.
Good luck with your appointent in March.
p.s.  If you do not get all the answers from your regular OB, you should make an appointment with an infertility specialist (RE).  They specialize in the sort of issues you are having.
