LEEP Question/FERTILITY ISSUE

Hi to all. I went back to the doc's today to get my biopsy results today and my doc told me that they were moderate to severe and that it needs to be treated. So he said that they could be frozen or burnt off (LEEP). He told me that the LEEP would be the best. I have been scheduled for my LEEP on May 12, 2009. I am a little afraid as I was with my biopsy but I know I will get through it. I already have fertility problems (no ovulation for the last 4 months as far as I know) and I know that this surgery can cause more fertility problems. Has anyone had this happen??? My doc didn't want to start an infertility workup because I am moving to Las Vegas, NV from Texas next month. I will have a blood pregnancy test and hormone panel done also on the 12th but it seems like such a long wait (doesn't it always?) Does anyone have any good advice for this problem??? I NEED HELP!

Yeah it is like any surgery I guess. I am 23 years old and this just makes me feel like I am getting the run around... The only good thing about this is that I will be moving the week after and getting a new doc that can actually do something about my fertility problems. It is so aggravating!

who got stitches and anthesia? I did not! They stuck some giant needle up there and it hurt (im guessing that was the anthesia) thats why i said take some Tylenol or something first!! I didn't have stitches but i did have to rest up for a few days!!

No problem. I am 36 now and had the LEEPs done back when I was in my early 20s and no one told me anything and unlike you I was not smart enough to ask. Obviously you need to have the surgery and good for you for keeping up with your pap smears - as for the area, what they do (I think, not a Doctor!) is put a dye on the area so they can see the spot and then take it out and a bit of extra to be safe (kind of like a mole). You should ask your doctor about a cream, I think it is called Effudex (???). It is a skin cancer cream, my doctor had me use it after my surgery (inserted like monistat cream) to ensure that all the cells were killed off. Of course this a while back so I am not sure if it is something that is still done, but my doctor is also a professor / researcher at Harvard so on top of all the things. Good luck, you will be fine!

Yeah my biopsy came back moderate to severe and because we are TTCing and I did have an abnormal pap previously he said that he would rather go ahead and treat it because it is only getting worse. At least I can close that chapter of my problem (for now)...

Thank you so much for your response. I don't know how much of an area will be removed. I will definitely be asking about general anesthetic for sure. I talked to a girlfriend that told me the same thing about the stitches. That scares me a little bit but it will definitely be worth it if I can get and stay pregnant again.

I think they only do the leep in severe cases! bk when i was 18 it was mild and they made me get the leep which i didnt' know but it was unnecessary (i mean they changed the rules and way they do stuff today) cus bk in November I had a bad pap again and this time I just got a biopsy no leep they said they would not unless the biopsy said something bad! I'm not sure on the fertility part they said I would able to have kids after it and at 27 I have still never got a BFP! EVER!! They did tell me though at my last appt though i still have plenty of cervix to hold a baby so im hoping they are right!!
I would try to get the infertility workup if you can and have insurance! I havent been ovulating good either so i started taking Vitex which has helped me!!
Take some pain meds b4 you go for that procedure all the poking and proding down there is going to make you cramp and it usually doesnt feel good at all!!

Hi

I had two LEEPs done. The first one was done while I was awake and the second I was under general anaesthesia, I have to say if you have the option - go for general. You will be crampy after and there will likely be bleeding/spotting. Ask for a pain prescription. I passed a huge clot about a week after which scared me but was normal, just the clotted blood from where they removed the tissue. As for infertility issues, since they are removing a part of your cervix this can cause "Incompetent Cervix" - meaning that the cervix is not strong enough to hold a pregnancy but since you know that this will be an issue once you do get pregnant you can find a high-risk OB who can monitor you closely and likely put in a cerclage at around 12 weeks - basically they stitch the cervix up. Often you will be put on some type of bed rest. I hope I understood your question and answered it okay. Good luck, and thankfully they caught this early.
