beta not doubling - could it be ectopic??

My initial beta was 196 on Friday, two days later it is 246.  It did not double as they had hoped.  I go back on Tuesday for more testing.  The nurse mentioned ectopic pregnancy.  I am freaking out.  This was our first and only IVF.  None of our remaining embryos made it to freezing.

I had an ectopic last summer (but not from IVF).  My first 2 betas did not double and then the third did so that was a little weird.  I had weird small crampies here and there but nothing too big to worry about and absolutely no bleeding.  I did not really feel that pregnant though and figured it could end in miscarriage since I had 2 before.  At 7 weeks my tube ruptured and I had emergency surgery to remove it.  It was obvious something was very wrong then - excrutiating pain and still no blood.  The only way to tell if you are having an ectopic is if they can't find a gestational sac in the uterus (and you are over 5w) but you still have HCG.  (In contrast to a regular miscarriage where they will see some sort of sac but it may be smaller or blobby with or without fetal pole, the measurements won't add up for the time you are along.  I also won't grow week to week as it should).  It was too late for me to take methotrexate so I had to have my tube removed.
I think it was strange for the nurse to jump to conclusions about ectopic by beta results alone.  It could just be a normal miscarriage as those betas will not double either.  But if you have any severe pain go to the doctor right away.  And ther have been reports in the past of slow rising hcg and everything ending up OK.  This was never the case with me but I hope it is for you.  Best of luck.
