Folic acid while ttc

I started taking folic acid last month after we began ttc but were unsuccessful.  I'm not going to worry about it because we haven't been ttc for long. I read and was told by my friend, who is pregnant that you should take it before conceiving.  I want to take the right amount but there seems to be a lot of differences in peoples suggestions for the correct dosage.  My folic acid pills ate 400 mg. But I've read you need either 400, 600,  or 800 mg per day. Can anyone help me with this?

I take 400mcg 1x daily.  My sister is a nurse and this is what she told me to take.
