In that case, like Helen said, there is no reason they should be making such a firm-sounding decision prior to seeing how many embryos you end up with and the quality of them. By all means, do all the research you can... knowledge is power after all !
My clinic is set up for 5-day transfers. If I remember correctly, the RE did mention something about the added cost of doing 5 days. I think some RE's get scared that if they wait for 5 day, there will be no embryos to transfer. I'm diligently doing research so I'm comfortable with the decision. :-D
Keep in mind that perhaps your clinic isn't set up to do day 5 transfers. I only know this because my doctor's clinic isn't. I kept pestering him about day-5s and he said that he wasn't comfortable doing it because he wasn't really set up for it (apparently you need different types of media to take an embryo to 5 days than you do to take it to 3 days). If your clinic generally goes with 3 days, they might also not really be set up for 5.
But again, as Helen said, the success rates are generally quite similar because of the numbers transferred.
Good luck.
Sorry it took me so long - here's the link:

I found this when I was in my tww after my 5 day transfer - very interesting reading.
Let me know if there's anything else I can help with - jen

Yes, please let me know if you find it. I want to be as informed as possible going into my retrieval and transfer date.
I got pregnant w/a 5 day transfer. I agree w/helen - it's strange that your re is making a decision like this before he sees how many eggs are retrieved, how the embryos develop, etc. but I know that some re's that do a 3 day transfer believe that the embryos do better in the mother's womb than in a petri dish.
There's one good debate that I posted about two years ago - I researched 3 day vs. 5 day transfer & came up w/this link - I'll sell if I can't find it.
my RE said they only do day 5 if u have more than 10embroys,then they move on to day 5 otherwise they do day 3 transfer.i had 15 embroyos thats y they decide to do day 5.
I thought it was weird about my RE too. We had a meeting a couple weeks ago to discuss my upcoming IVF cycle, and sign consent forms and things like that. My husband said we definitely want 2 embryos transferred. Then he said he would recommend a 3-day transfer. I questioned him on that, but like I said, there was so much information going on, I can't remember what his rationale was.
I agree. . . I would think the RE would wait to see how many eggs were retrieved, and things like that.
Day 3 transfer worked for me. Typically, ivf clinics see how your embryos develop and only then decide on day 3 or day 5 transfer so it is strange that your RE would insist on day 3 before he/she knows how your embryos look like.
Success rates for day 3 and day 5 are similar because on day 3 more embryos are typically transferred. For me my RE transferred 3 embryos on day 3 but on day 5 only 2 blasts would have been transferred.
5day frozen worked 4 me,& fresh didnt work.i gues i heard it doesnt matter its 3day or5 day.its all depends on how ur body respond.only thing is in day5 RE gets more idea about goodquality embys thas all.that doesnt mean day3 embys they wont get idea so many girls got sucess with day3embys too.as i said all depends on ur own body.goodluck.
5-day worked for me...but I also know of others on here who had a successful 3-day!
Best of luck with your IVF!
