How likely is overstimulation with injectables? Anyone been through this?

I met will RE today and will start injectables this cycle.  She spent a lot of time going over the side effects and overstimulation, but could not give me any percentage of overstimulating.  She said it is just based on each person and  there is a possiblity of being hospitalized and having fluid drained if overstiulated.  Has this happened to anyone? Is it pretty rare? That has me a little freaked out, but am more than willing to do whatever it takes.  Re said it can be very painful but I will be monitored every 2-3 days with u/s and blood work.  I am nervous and excited about starting the injectables after 7 rounds of clomid and looking for any insight.  Thanks!

my last two cycles have been cancled due to ohss its been mild though. two months ago i have 11 mature follicles and this month i had 17 or 18. its very frustrating and emotionally taxing to think the cycle is going good and your taking time off work to go there over other day just to be told "you have too many follicles we have to cancle this cycle"

I had moderate hyperstimulation. My ovaries swelled to 9 cm. I had alot of cramping and had to be monitored. It gets worse if you get pregnant because of the increase in hormones.I didnt get pregnant so everything returned to normal after 2 weeks. On my next cycles they knew better how my system responds. If you need to know more let me know.

I was at risk because I am smaller and responded really well to the injections (so much so that I ended up with several cysts and had to take this cycle off).

My RE gave me a "diet" that helps prevent OHSS.  It is really important to keep yourself hydrated, have sufficient protein, and balance the salts and eloctrolytes.  I followed the diet because I was very nervous and I thankfully did not get OHSS.  Extreme OHSS is very rare but even a moderate case can be very uncomfortable due to fluid build up etc.

- At least 1 litre of Gatorade and or V8 juice per day (chicken soup is also good)
- 2 meal replacements a day (such as Ensure - not sure if you have this in the US?)

Good luck!  Hopefully you don't get OHSS..and you DO get a BFP!

My RE told me that real OHSS only happens at his office about once or twice a year.  And he does occassionally  get cases of mild OHSS which doesn't effect the cycle.  I don't have to worry though b/c I am a "poor responder" .

My RE also went over the overstimulation a lot with us.  They said though it usually happens in 20-25 year olds because their bodies respond really well to the medication.  She said it was just a slight risk that it would happen like 5% or something like that.

Hope this helps you feel better.
