Metformin

Hi ladies, starting metformin soon and I was wondering what to expect? I've been looking online and it seems to be a medicine for diabetics although I've seen women talking about it on the forum in the past. I'm sure my re explained this to me, but I was overloaded with other info so it probably went in one ear and out the other-so much to remember.
Thank you for any help!!

Hi. I've been on it for PCOS for years now. In the beginning I had diarrhea but i should have regulated my diet better to help that.  I also lost a bunch of weight on it , kept it off for four years but now have gained it back. i remember being nauseated the first couple weeks on it but that fades.  Fatty foods will give you diarrhea when taking it in the beginning.  good luck.

Hey - I am a believer in Metformin. I have PCOS and I ovulated the first month I was on it - didn't get preggo but I ovulated. I would go months without a period so this was a big accomplishment for me :) I started the medicine on CD1 and I ovulated around CD 18. So, I liked that part about it....

Ok, here comes the bad news: It sucks! Well, at least in the beginning. Go as slow as possible when upping the meds. Also (VERY IMPORTANT) make sure you EAT BEFORE you take it. Let the food settle for about 10 minutes and THEN take the meds. It worked for me. After about 2 miserable weeks someone told me this and it made me feel soooooooo much better. Some people say they get diarrhea from it - mine was the opposite. I just felt nausous a lot before I made sure I ate first. Soooooooo....

1. Gradually go up in dosage
2. Eat and then wait about 10 minutes before taking the pills
3. Try to space out the meds - if you are taking 1000mg - take 500 at breakfast and 500 at lunch

Hope this helps you! HUGS and good luck!

Hi jjsh44,  I was on metformin for several months.  Although I didn't have any luck with it, I hear many do.  It's supposed to help regulate the insulin in your body to help with PCOS so that your ovaries can ovulate on their own.  In my experience, the first couple of weeks were rough....I felt very nauseated after taking it, so make sure you gradually increase your dosage to get to your full dose.  (for example, I was on 1000mg and started with 250 for a week, then 500 for a week, then 1000mg)  Hope this helps!
