There's a big difference between the two procedures. An HSG is basically a test where they flush liquid through your uterus and tubes to see if they're open. If there are no blockages, it's usually not painful, but it can hurt and cramp if there are blockages. However, it's a fairly simple procedure that is done in a few minutes and you're awake the whole time. The laporoscapy, on the other hand, is done under full anesthesia and is considered exploratory surgery. It will give the doctor a much better idea of the anatomy of your uterus, tubes and pelvic region, and he/she will be able to look for endometriosis and other problems. If there's mild to moderate endometriosis, it can often be removed during the surgery.

Since the HSG test is much less invasive, I would think that would be a good first step....but of course this completely is up to you and your doctor.

Just to add my experience to the mix, my HSG didn't hurt at all...so looks like it depends on the person and their situation; but either way, it's a quick in-office procedure, vs laporoscopy, which is considered surgery. Best of luck with your decision!

My hsg was fairly painful but it was worth it in the end.   I'm almost at 3 months now.   I would go for the HSG before I opted for the surgery that is for sure.

Good luck!

I had an HSG as well and I don't know what the deal was with my particular doctor since a lot of ladies on here say it's not that painful, but like foreverpoppy9, it was THE most painful thing I have ever had done (though within a few hours I felt much better.) I guess it varies from person to person, though...

I've had 2 hsgs, they were not painful at all. After the first one, they told me that both my tubes are blocked, referred me for a laparoscopy. But I had another hsg done instead, which showed that only one is blocked. I'm now pregnant, so one of them is obviously open.

just a thought but at the facility i work they can do the HSG (tube study) during the laparoscopy so you can get them both done.

i had a HSG and it was the most painful thing I've EVER experienced. I'd rather give birth 10 times then do that again! and my epidural wore off when i had my daughter so if thats sayinig anything for you. not everyone is like that but thats my female organs for you :P

good luck deciding
