P.S. - another reason for going organic - The chemicals in most pesticides are hormone disruptors and can also lead to infertility. I am not some loony granola crunchy girl, it is sadly the truth. I have spent a lot of time on bedrest for the past 3 years, after many surgeries and treatments, and dedicated my time to learning about what could be affecting my fertility. I have educated myself extensively on the subject. Have you ever heard of BPA (bisphenol-A)?? Some plastic products say "BPA free" these days? Well, just one more thing to avoid. It is banned in ALL industrialized countries except for the US, because it too is a hormone disruptor. Until a few years ago, we were making our BABY BOTTLES with it!!! Just another thing to consider. Don't heat foods in plastic tupperwear or put warm things in plastics that are not BPA free - it can leach out. I converted a lot of my stuff to glass.
OK, I'll stop my rant now! ;o)
I have PCOS, but I also have many other issues (adenomyosis, endometriosis and asherman's syndrome). I tried clomid, 2 IUI's, and 2 IVF's, but couldn't manage to stay pregnant for longer than 3 days. I think because my hormones were off. I had something done called ovarian drilling, which is a surgical procedure for women with PCOS where they drill out the small cysts in your ovaries. Somehow (I have no idea how!) for SOME women (not all - it does not always work for everyone so it is a risk) it can correct your hormones for approximately 3-6 months and allow you to ovulate on your own. It worked in spades for me! After trying everything else, I ovulated the first month after the surgery on my own, and nothing. The second month I ovulated again on my own and we tried a product called Preseed - an internal lubricant that is supposed to help the sperm get to where they need to be. PRESTO!!! Now I'm almost 17 weeks pregnant! I never thought it would happen!
I know other women who have had success with just being on metformin, others with clomid or IUI. However, while some doctors are not big advocates of ovarian drilling.... I certainly am! I wish I'd tried it first! The procedure is not that bad and you are healed in a matter of days. Just something to consider. But certainly try metformin first - that may be all you need!!!
As for weight loss - start with eliminating ALL refined sugars from your diet. Including white bread, pasta, etc.... You have to read labels carefully, because these days they put high fructose corn syrup in everything - INCLUDING WHEAT BREAD!!! So you may THINK you are avoiding refined sugars in white bread, but sometimes it is not the case. You have to read labels. There are plenty of wheat and other substitute options for pasta and other stuff. Low glycemic options for sweetening are honey (don't overdo it) and something you may want to try that you can have as much as you want of is agave syrup. It can be found in the sweetener section near the honey in natural/organic foods sections of many stores. It is very sweet like sugar with 0 consequence and no chemicals or artificial stuff. With PCOS, sugar is your enemy - start there.
My next advice for weight loss would be go organic. It can be expensive but it helped me a lot. You may not realize it but hormones in your food = more hormones in you...knocking off the balance of your own hormones. Dairy and meat all have hormones, and if you read beauty product labels, you will see some say "no parabens". Methylparaben, Ethylparaben...they are parabens. Guess what parabens are? Synthetic estrogen! Guess who already have an excess of estrogen? Women with PCOS! It's just one more way you can look out for yourself.
Best of luck to you - let me know if you have any other questions. I have pretty much "been there, done that" with everything under the sun regarding infertility treatments and PCOS!!!
Kate Gosselin from (Jon & KAte) has PCOS & she got pregnant from IUI. She wrote about it in her book Multiple Blessings.......
Good Luck to you.!!!!
With pcos you will tend to have higher testosterone levels which will cause you not to ovulate, another symptom is higher level of blood glucose which will make you keep the weight on. My RE put me on metformin to help control the B.G. They said that it will also help me lose some weight. I haven't been on it longer so I am excited to see if it works. My suggestion would be o o see a fertility Doc or ask your family doc to do some blood testing to see if your Blood sugar is up and get that controlled and hopefully that will help with weight and fertility. Wishing you the best of luck and sending lots of baby dust.
